The Briton participated in this year’s Wimbledon tournament, but was knocked out in the fourth round. On Saturday, the women’s Wimbledon final will be played between Tunisian Ons Jabeur and Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan. In connection with the tournament in London, discussions about the dress code have flared up. For the regulations under Wimbledon are based on restrictive guidelines, where only white clothes are allowed. SPEAKING OUT: Monica Puig pictured during Wimbledon in 2013. Not to mention the mental stress of wearing only white clothes during Wimbledon, and hoping not to get your period during the two weeks, former Olympic champion Monica Puig wrote on Twitter in May. She is one of several tennis players who have shared the discomfort and anxiety about menstruating during tennis tournaments. FINALLY: Former tennis star Monica Puig thinks it’s time for menstruation to be discussed at Wimbledon. Photo: Screenshot / Twitter «Cleanest color» The Wimbledon dress code has historical roots and is based on an old tradition from 1877. The regulations provide guidelines for athletes’ choice of clothes during matches and training. The white shade used is also essential and should not be off-white or creamy white. Eurosport commentator Christer Francke understands the challenge for women. – If there are things like that, you may have to allow the girls to play in dark skirts, Francke says to news. – How difficult is it to change the regulations? – I think it is quite difficult because it is part of the Wimbledon tournament. Then it must be the case that you can play in dark trousers if there are challenges with menstruation, and that you make a rule change there, says Francke. TRADITION: Heather Watson likes the all-white tradition, but also opens up about her own concerns. Photo: HANNAH MCKAY / Reuters According to the British Independent, which quotes a book by Valerie Warren about tennis fashion, the white clothes were originally about players avoiding sweat marks on colored clothes. Although British Watson admits that she is afraid to bleed through the white clothes, she believes that it is something very special to play in white. – I really like the tradition of it, and I do not want to change it. My only problem is if I get my period, but I only plan my period around it, she says. Got her period during match Daria Saville, who smoked out of this year’s Wimbledon in the first round, has this week shared her menstrual experiences on TikTok. The video has received over 2 million views. – When I was still on birth control pills, I chose to stand over the menstrual period so as not to stress and be afraid to bleed through during a match, Saville says. CHALLENGES: Daria Saville shares her experiences of playing big games with her period. Photo: Mark J. Terrill / AP To the TikTok viewers, the Australian tells that she got her period during a match ten years ago, when she participated in her very first Grand Slam in the Australian Open. – I lost the first set and had to go to the bathroom. Then I find out that I have got my period. During tennis matches, only two toilet visits are allowed. It created trouble for Saville. – Luckily there was a female tennis referee, so I told her about the situation. I did not have tampons so the judge had to call the support staff to pick it up for me. Then I had to go back to the toilet and do my thing, says Saville. Sporting challenger Heather Watson tells the BBC that she spoke to Daria Saville about the menstrual problem ahead of this year’s tournament. She did not say anything about whether menstruation had an effect on Watson’s Wimbledon exit, but there is little doubt that it could have a negative effect on performance. – It is an inhibiting factor. If you go and think about such things and are going to perform at a high level, in a sport like tennis where there are so many good players, it will go beyond performance. It is a stressful moment that really should not have been, Francke considers.

ttn-69

“There is definitely something the athletes are talking about around Wimbledon because of the white clothes,” Heather Watson told BBC Sport.
