A little chaotic. This is how nurse and professional consultant at Pro Senteret, Aleksander Sørlie, describes the process of obtaining a monkey cup test. More and more people are being infected with monkey pox in Norway, and the number is now up to 25. At the same time, the infection is exploding all over the world. The World Health Organization has convened a crisis meeting to discuss whether the outbreak should be categorized as a global health crisis. In the current outbreak, more than 6,000 people have been confirmed to be infected worldwide. – What are the rules? Sørlie’s girlfriend tested positive for monkey cups, and a few days later he also felt symptoms. But when he had to call Oslo Municipality to ask for a test, things got complicated. – It was difficult to get information and get a test, he says. Sørlie had to stop by the corona telephone, the infection tracking team in the district, the Olafia clinic, the corona telephone and finally, the National Institute of Public Health. – It was difficult to get information about how long I should isolate myself, or what I should do. What are the rules? Finally, he was given a test, which confirmed that he was also infected. This met Sørlie when he tried to get a test When his girlfriend was confirmed infected with monkey pox, and Sørlie started to get symptoms, he called the corona phone to Oslo municipality, which is where one must call to order a test. There he was told that they would not test him because he did not have clear blisters. Nor could they give him guidance on isolation in case of infection. It was the infection detection team in the district that was going. He also called his girlfriend’s infection detection team. They gave a clear message that the corona phone was wrong and that he should be tested, but they could not do so. He was told to call the Olafia clique. From the clinic he was told that they can not test and have never tested for monkey cups. Here he was again told to call the corona phone. – If I were 20 years old, I would never have bothered to go through all this to get a test, when I first got no. Then I would most likely have let it go, he says and add: – This is an inappropriate way. Has not had blisters Sørlie also tells that he and his girlfriend have not had these characteristic blisters. – It worries me a little that it is not communicated so clearly that you can be infected without the blisters. This image is the people most often encountered when they search for monkey cups. Illustration: Medscape If you search for the virus online, a picture of the blisters appears, and it is easy to think that you must have them to be ill, he says. Since Friday, Sørlie has had a fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches and a lot of pain in the body. – I feel really sick, but I expect that it was the blisters I came to notice. The municipal chief in Oslo municipality, Synne Schou Øhrberg, writes in an e-mail to news that it is sad to hear that it has been difficult to get tested in Oslo. – We are constantly learning new things about the disease and national recommendations have therefore been changed continuously as needed. The municipality now has other test criteria. – FHI recommended at an early stage not to test persons without blisters or visible rashes, and the corona telephone has always adhered to the national guidelines. It is now open to also test those who are probably infected without a rash, through a sample that is taken in the throat, writes Øhrberg. Symptoms vary Chief physician and specialist in infectious diseases at FHI Siri Feruglio tells news that one can get the disease without getting blisters. – Someone will get a different disease presentation than what is usual. For example, with only pain in the throat and fever or rash that does not resemble the “classic” presentation. Monkey cup information from NIPH and the Norwegian Directorate of Health. Photo: FHI She further says that most people want to have a feeling of illness, and if one is close contact with the infection, it is important to get a sample taken and avoid close contact with others until the test result is clear. “Some people may have a more unusual picture of the disease and it is important that one is aware of the fact that one has had close contact or sex with an infected person,” says Feruglio. According to the superior in Oslo, the municipality has established a test offer for monkey cups. GPs, emergency services, the Olafia Clinic and some other agencies can refer to FHI. The alternative is to call the corona phone and get an hour. – If you have close contact with someone who is infected and have other symptoms that are similar to monkey cups, you will be offered a test.

ttn-69

– It was a lot back and forth.
