Together with two other bus drivers, general manager Per Aslak Luuso will drive holidaymakers directly from Alta to Oslo. – I thought why not offer a trip to Oslo if there are families with children and others who needed to get to and from, says Luuso. The pilot strike in SAS, where 900 pilots have gone on strike, has led to a number of flights being canceled. According to SAS chief in Norway, Kjetil Hålbjørg, around 30,000 passengers will be affected by the strike daily and about 15,000 of them will get to where they plan to travel. – As a small bus company from Alta, we are obliged to help a little. Now his phone rings in a set of people who want space. He reckons that the bus will be full and several have also expressed interest in the trip north. She and cousin Isabella Emblemsvåg Andersen (12) have been on holiday with family in Alta and the travel plans were abruptly changed when their SAS flight was canceled as a result of the strike. – I thought it was a bit silly because I quite wanted to go home, says Johanna. The plan was for relatives to drive the girls each part of the stretch, before they came across a newspaper ad for Luuso’s bus trip. Now the cousins are getting ready to ride the bus for a whole day. – I think it is easier for young people to take a bus trip of 24 hours than it is for adults, says Luuso. – One should not be afraid to take advantage of the opportunity when it presents itself, says Per Aslak Luuso, who has arranged the bus trip to Oslo. Photo: Christina Gjertsen / news Great demand for tickets Several travel operators are well aware that many holidaymakers now need an alternative to flights. – The demand for buying train tickets has become very large after the strike became a fact, so the trains are filling up fast now, says Hilde Lyng. She is information manager at SJ Nord, which operates the Dovre line and the Nordlands line. On some departures, they have deployed extra carriages and train sets, but they will not deploy more departures as a result of the strike. – We have strengthened the trains to the extent we have had the opportunity to do so, but we do not run any extra departures, she says. Hilde Lyng, information manager at SJ Nord, asks people to check more departures when booking travel by train. Photo: SJ Nord Vy also notices the progress. – We experience that there are many who contact our customer center to ask about how it is possible to travel, says press officer in Vy, Gina Schulz. Nevertheless, summer routes are sufficient to meet demand. – Basically, the buses run with holiday traffic. This means that they already have several departures that are adapted for many people to go on holiday these days. So there we already drive extra what we can of buses and also trains, Schulz explains. Asking people to be flexible There are many who travel and the train companies say people must be prepared for sold-out departures and longer waiting times. They ask passengers to be flexible when booking travel. “People have to prepare for sold-out departures and that they have to check more times and departures,” says Schulz. Photo: Color Line Erik Brynhildsbakken, executive vice president for communication and public relations at the ferry company Color Line, says they will do what they can to meet travelers’ needs. – We, as tourism as such, are concerned with having a well-functioning tourism, it benefits everyone. So it is sad for those who are affected now and then we hope that this is resolved in a good way for the travelers, and we will help as many as we can, he says.

ttn-69

On Wednesday morning, a bus from the bus company Luuso AS embarks on a long journey.
