The sun is trying to break through the clouds at the training facility of the Premier League club Brighton, where Norway is charging up for Thursday’s European Championship start against Northern Ireland. Pettersen goes from journalist to journalist on the lawn. From not being involved with the national team for many years, she has become someone everyone wants to talk to. – The journey back to the national team has been very long. It was a period of five years where I was not involved at all, it has been a long journey and I have learned a lot along the way. It feels good to be here now, says Pettersen. IN FRONT: Guro Pettersen is first in line now. Photo: VEGARD GRØTT / BILDBYRÅN – When did you feel that you were furthest away from this place in the squad? – Oh, my God. Maybe in 2017–2018. Then I felt quite far away. Special entry on the national team Pettersen was taken out in his very first national team squad already as a 21-year-old, but the goalkeeper talent had to wait a long time to be released. The debut first came against Kosovo earlier this year. Former national team manager Eli Landsem remembers well how Pettersen first got into the national team heat. – When I was national team coach, Guro started at the sports college. And on the first day at the sports college, they had to write down their goals. One of the goals for Guro was to get on the national team. And later that day I called from La Manga because we had injured the goalkeeper and she had to come in. So it took about an hour and a half until she set that goal until it was reached. So it was the first time she was selected for the national team, says Landsem and laughs. TOOK OUT PETTERSEN: Eli Landsem took out Guro Pettersen on the national team for the first time. You have to keep working and then you have to have some luck. It’s a lot of hard work. We should have had an in-depth interview if I had told more about it, says Pettersen. Photo: Berit Roald / NTB Landsem was national team manager for Norway from 2009 to 2012 and knows Pettersen well through his job as sports manager for Vålerenga. – She is dedicated and never gives up. That she continues to work hard so that she gets there, she should have all the credit for, says Landsem. Goalkeeping coach on the national team, Roger Eskeland, is also impressed with Pettersen’s patience and work. – It is often the case for the goalkeepers that they have to be patient. So it is very nice to see the patience and ambition she has shown. It gives results, says Eskeland. THE DEBUT: In the snowy weather in Sandefjord, Guro Pettersen got her first minutes for Norway when she was replaced by Cecilie Fiskerstrand. Photo: VEGARD GRØTT / BILDBYRÅN – Match-deciding goalkeeper For ten years, Ingrid Hjelmseth was Norway’s undisputed first choice in goal. When she put her gloves on the shelf in 2019, it was Cecilie Fiskerstrand who took over as first goalkeeper. But when she broke her cruciate ligament during training only a few months before the start of the European Championships, an opportunity opened up for Pettersen. An opportunity she has taken with a firm grip. – She has made two very good matches. Both against New Zealand but above all against Denmark. She shows that she can be a decisive goalkeeper, and she was with the important saves in the second round against Denmark, says national team manager Martin Sjögren. When asked about Pettersen’s national team journey and patience, he answers: – It is never too late. And now we stand here, now she enters a championship where she most likely for quite a lot of playing time. I look forward to seeing Guro in this championship.

ttn-69

– If you had asked me three years ago, I would never have thought I would be here today, Guro Pettersen says candidly to news.
