– The way she follows up on this case will be decisive for our trust in the Minister of Justice, says H\u00f8yre’s justice policy spokesperson Sveinung Stensland to news. Last week, the report from the committee that investigated the attack in Oslo last summer was presented. The report concludes that the attack in central Oslo could have been averted if PST had handled and assessed information that the service had in a different way. Two men were killed, nine people suffered gunshot wounds and a further 25 people suffered other injuries in the chaos that followed the attack, before the perpetrator was overpowered. The police security service (PST) receives criticism on a number of points in the report. There will be a debate right after Mehl’s speech, before the Storting will consider how the case will be followed up further. The case can be sent to the justice committee or to the Storting’s control and constitution committee, where cases often end up that could end up with criticism of the government or a minister. As of today, there is no basis for a no-confidence motion against the minister, Conservative leader Erna Solberg stated to VG at the weekend. But then she followed up by stating that it is the handling going forward that will determine Mehl’s position: – It is the follow-up of the report that determines whether I have confidence or not. The government must clean this up, said Solberg. It looks like there is some kind of rivalry between the various secret services, who are there to look after us all. It is actually impossible to live with, says Stensland. – How is the Conservative Party’s confidence in the Minister of Justice at the moment? – The Conservative Party’s trust in the Minister of Justice is as it has been. We must measure people by their actions, and what they achieve. In this case, the way this is followed up will be decisive for how we view the Minister of Justice, says Stensland and continues: – Here the Minister of Justice has a golden opportunity to show action, not just lots of words, but actual action. Want measures The most important thing is that the Minister of Justice and the government show that they take this very seriously, says Venstres Grunde Almeland. He now asks Mehl to say what she herself intends to do. – It is all well and good that she is asking PST and the Norwegian Police Directorate to present new measures. Because there are a number of things that these bodies have to do. But what we in Venstre and the whole queer movement have been saying for a year that it lacks, is that the Minister of Justice herself takes responsibility and says what she and the government intend to do. That has been missing until now, continues Almeland. – What measures can we envisage? – There are a number of things we have to uncover and put in place. But we see that the cooperation between the various services has been too poor. There we have to look at what steps need to be taken to strengthen that cooperation and strengthen trust between the various services, says Almeland. – We must also look at the resource situation, of course, if required. Mehl: Serious picture When the Minister of Justice was interviewed by the press at the Storting before the weekend, she said that she expects the PST and the police to work on measures that can be “implemented immediately”. – This report is serious. It paints a serious picture, and especially the one that suggests that PST could possibly have prevented the attack, she told news last week. – Do you trust those who lead these agencies? – I have confidence in them now.
