The IMF delivered its report to the Ministry of Finance at 9am, and the main conclusion is that the Norwegian economy is strong. Asking for an interest rate increase Norwegian home owners have had to endure a sharp rise in interest rates over the past year, but there is probably more to come. Norway should raise interest rates further to get inflation under control, writes the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a report on the Norwegian economy. Fiscal policy must avoid being too expansive so as not to act as an inflationary driver, the report states. Policy rate in percent The policy rate is set eight times a year by Norges Bank. The policy interest rate governs the interest rates in the banks, and affects your housing costs. The aim of raising the interest rate is for the high prices to come down again. That is part of the explanation for the weak krone exchange rate. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization with 190 member countries that ensures monetary cooperation and orderly currency relations. The IMF also provides loans and aid to poor countries. The IMF regularly reviews developments in the individual member countries’ economy and economic policy. The Ministry of Finance is responsible for Norwegian policy towards the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Believes interest deductions should be phased out In the previous report, the monetary fund noted the risk in the Norwegian housing market. They believed that Norway must consider further measures to limit the high and interest-sensitive housing debt. The monetary fund called for the easing of regulations to make housing construction more efficient and, not least, to gradually phase out the interest deduction on mortgages. This is a central part of Norwegian housing policy, and will probably be a long way from being removed, even though several economic experts have suggested this. Increased food prices The comparison of food prices and the wage trend says something about whether you get more, less or the same amount for your money. When the development of food prices is higher than the development of wages, it means that food has become more expensive. Both figures are averages for the specified period. How much food prices have increased in the last year, compared to wage developments Risk in the world economy In a report on the world economy that came out in April, the IMF stated that the risk of a new financial crisis has become significantly higher. As far as Europe is concerned, the IMF stated that there is a clear decline in growth going forward, but that most countries will avoid recession. For the continent as a whole, growth of 0.8 per cent is expected this year, compared to 3.6 per cent last year and 1.4 per cent next year. Germany is expected to experience a mild recession this year, and thus joins the UK as the only G7 countries expected to experience a decline in 2023.
