Several of the world’s leading AI researchers have signed the petition. One of the signatures belongs to Sam Altman, the man behind the company that makes Chat GPT. Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, has also joined the petition. CIS makes ominous predictions about what artificial intelligence can be used for: AI can be used as a weapon, for example by using the tools to discover new drugs, to create chemical weapons. AI-generated disinformation can destabilize society and destroy our capacity for collective decision-making The power of AI can become too concentrated, enabling regimes to suppress and monitor General weakening, where people become as dependent on AI as in the movie “Wall-E » – Reducing the risk of extinction from artificial intelligence should be a global priority, says the appeal. Tired of “doomsday prophecies” Other researchers believe the dangers are overestimated. Geoffrey Hinton, Yann Lechun and Yoshua Bengio are often referred to as the godfathers of artificial intelligence, after years of pioneering work in the field. But the godfathers do not agree on the dangers of artificial intelligence. While Hinton has signed the petition, Lechun has said he does not support the apocalyptic warnings. – The usual reaction of AI researchers when they hear these doomsday prophecies is to put their face in their hands, wrote Lechun in a recent tweet. The French KI researcher receives support from her Norwegian colleague, researcher and writer Inga Strümke. TIRED: Ki researcher Inga Strümke is fed up with petitions, signature campaigns and doomsday prophecies. She believes they destroy the debate. Photo: Ine Julia Rojahn Schwebs / news – There is complete inflation in the polls. I’m getting a little annoyed. Based on my small sample of AI researchers, I notice that people are starting to think this is a little strange. She says the content of the appeal seems speculative and caricatured. – We have not seen artificial intelligence do damage on the level of nuclear weapons yet. I’m much more concerned about climate and cyber security, so I don’t understand these constant calls. “Look how responsible we are” Strümke, who recently wrote a bestseller about artificial intelligence, thinks people should be skeptical when dealing with doomsday prophets. – There is a very “wolf, wolf” atmosphere now. I understand that people get enough when the debate is always about what kind of monster we have created. The debate needs to go much further down to earth. She believes that the plan by Sam Altman and his colleagues is about more things than just AI. – It may well be that there is a bit of image building here. “See how responsible we are”. “See how much we think about the big picture”. It could be that Sam Altman is socially engaged and genuinely cares. Or they may think this is really good PR. It can be so much different. EU creates new AI law During June, the EU will vote on a new AI law, which will be the first of its kind. The regulations have already received criticism for coming up with too few specific requirements. Inga Strümke has been one of the critics, but she is happy that something is happening. – I am glad that it exists, because it concretizes the discussion. I have called for algorithm supervision in Norway, but I am told that it will be too difficult. My point is that we have to make something concrete, in order to be able to have the debate at all, says Strümke.

ttn-69

The threat from artificial intelligence is compared to nuclear war and pandemic, in a petition on the website of the “Center for AI Safety” (CIS).
