As far as the long-term forecast goes, zero precipitation is expected. Last year, large areas of forest had to be lost to the wrath of the flames. But what everyone fears is a forest fire summer like in 2018. Drangedal was the municipality that was worst hit, with as many as 23 cases of forest fire. In Skien, the fire service has increased preparedness in line with the forest fire warning and the weather we are expecting. – Approaching orange level In Vestfold and Telemark, it has been extremely dry throughout May. In several places, there has been 70-80 per cent less rainfall than normal this month, says the Meteorological Institute. Bente Wahl, state meteorologist at the Meteorological Institute. Photo: MAGNE VELLE – There is no doubt. It is very dry. In addition, we have had a lot of wind, which means that it dries up extra, says state meteorologist Bente Wahl. Right now, the meteorologists are reporting a yellow danger warning, which means that there is a moderate risk of forest fire. The meteorologists operate with two danger levels for forest fires, yellow and orange. There is a locally high risk of forest fires, until there is significant rainfall, the Meteorological Institute informs. Photo: Meteorological Institute This means that we only have to go up a notch on the meteorologists’ danger scale before there is a real danger that the forest fire could become large and difficult to handle. – It is probably close to the orange level. We may well adjust it a little later in the week, says Wahl. – Could be a problem The meteorologist is concerned. – If it is dry throughout the summer, this could become a problem, she says, recalling in particular the extreme summer of 2018. The way the forecasts look today, it looks very dry until mid-June. – If something ignites now, there is a greater risk of spreading. It is not only carelessness with fires that can ignite now, but other things can ignite, for example near railways, explains Wahl. – You have to be extremely careful, she says. Prepared for the worst There are large local variations. There is still snow in the mountains. Along the coast and well inland in southern Norway, it is unusually dry. The forest fire plane in the South-East area has already had its first monitoring round in Whitsunday. In Vestfold and Telemark, the fire service has run local exercises throughout the county to be prepared. Forest fire in Drangedal in 2022. He shares the meteorologist’s concern, and does not want a repeat of the summer of five years ago – The summer of 2018 is freshest in his memory. We had a very long warm period that ended with a bang and a lot of fires at once. This is what we see as the most challenging scenario for the fire service. Ove Stokkeland is chairman of the board for joint forest fire preparedness in Telemark and works on a daily basis as head of staff in Grenland fire and rescue. Photo: Nils Fridtjof Skumsvoll \/ news This is a vulnerable phase, he says. You can do this There have been several cases of smaller grass and heather fires this spring, and almost all of them are man-made, Stokkeland says. – It is the most important thing the public can help us with, to notify us early if they see something similar to a forest fire, so that we can start extinguishing work as soon as possible. But you can do more. Here are the chief of staff’s tips: Make wise choices. Plan your trip well and bring a lunch, food and drink that are suitable for a trip without a cozy fire, now that it is risky. If you have a cabin or house adjacent to the forest, get an overview of the terrain and clear the vegetation. Where can it catch fire? Avoid flammable objects close to the cabin wall. Keep a watchful eye on your own and other people’s activity on the trip. Extinguish a disposable barbecue or fire, if someone has neglected it.
\n

\n
ttn-69 <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
It’s been a long time since the forests and terrain in southern Norway got a real root rot.
