The “anomaly” is one such. It can offer a couple of juicy surprises, which can probably be experienced as fantastic, even unrealistic, if you get them presented in such a retelling that we often use in book reviews. But in the book, they are introduced so gradually and cunningly, that one only nods understandingly when the revelation eventually comes. The novel is called a thriller, which is true, although it is much more than that. It is also a lively thought experiment, with elements of sci-fi and fantastic literature. Almost like a group work between the greats of the absurd and the fantastic, like Italo Calvino, Albert Camus and Douglas Adams. The “anomaly” has clear elements of satire. It is not free of meta-literary elements where it plays with the writing process and the author’s round dance in the literary ecosystem. The author Victor, who is in the novel, gets the pleasure of experiencing the literary milieu’s homage to him and his work – after he has died. And how can such a thing happen? Simply because there are two of Victor. The second plane The problems begin with a French plane that breaks out of a violent storm cloud in June 2021. The plane is on its way to New York, but is diverted by astonished air traffic controllers, due to the fact that this plane has already landed. cause for concern. The same planes are constantly landing at airports on both sides of the Atlantic. That is precisely why they are called scheduled flights. The only problem is that the exact same plane also went in for landing in March of the same year. With the same crew – and the same passengers. Which of us is going to get my roommate? In one way or another, a new, identical aircraft has emerged on the way across the Atlantic. This leaves deep marks in the understanding of reality for everyone who is close to this phenomenon, which one rightly begins to call the “anomaly”. In addition, it creates highly emotional and practical problems for the people on these two planes, who now have to find Le Tellier follows a group of eleven passengers on this (or these?) flights and their attempts to negotiate solutions with the alternative version of themselves. They need to find answers to questions such as: Who am I, if there are two of me? Which of us is the most me? And which of us is going to have my things, my career and my apartment? Not to mention my roommate and my child? These passengers are very different, and they handle this existential crisis in very different ways. From friendly agreements, via something more reminiscent of a kind of breakup with, or inheritance settlement after, oneself, to outright murder of the troublesome double. The real reality literature At the same time, the rest of the world is out of stock, and the reality picture is in operation. So much so that one can well call this book the real reality literature, that is, the literature on how reality is screwed together. Or maybe rather: coded. Because it is actually conceivable that life is just a computer simulation. Or is it, on the contrary, God’s unstable finger we sense behind it all? Le Tellier is a French writer of the sophisticated type, who before this has moved more into the avant-garde corner of French literature. The “anomaly” was the definitive breakthrough for a large audience. The book has sold over a million copies in its home country, and has given the author the Goncourt Prize. It has become a well-written and daring thought experiment, which convinces both as a philosophical examination of the consistency of identity and reality, and as pure suspense and entertainment literature. It is strikingly well done. news reviewer Photo: Pax publishing house Title: «The anomaly» Author: Hervé Le Tellier Genre: Roman Publishing house: Pax Number of pages: 304 Date: 2022

ttn-69

Some novels should only be read without knowing too much about them in advance.
