They also feared for the safety of the 10,000 people who have jobs nearby. – I can’t believe that it has gone this far, says leader Mahmood Enayat to AFP. – A foreign state has become such a significant threat to the British people, on British soil, that we are forced to move. The election is said to have been taken late on Friday, after an Austrian-Iranian man was arrested last week in the vicinity of the media house in Chiswick, west London. Amini has previously been a journalist in several Iranian newspapers, and was imprisoned for a short period for his activism in 2007. Photo: Javad Montazeri / Norsk PEN This is a few days after Asieh Amini was a guest in the studio. She is an Iranian activist, journalist and author, and has lived in Trondheim since 2009. – I noticed a very strong guard around the building, with patrols and dogs. They checked everything that we had on our bodies and in our bags. It was very clear that there was an ongoing threat against the building and the employees, she says to news. Amini has himself been called and threatened by the Iranian regime several years ago. She knows other journalists who have been exposed to the same thing. – The regime has many times threatened the journalists of BBC Persian, Radio Farda and Voice of America’s Persian department. Also in this case: Charged with terrorism on Monday Groups linked to the Iranian regime are said to have tried to kidnap or kill 15 people in the UK since the start of 2022, the London police told the BBC. A 30-year-old man was arrested last week near the media building in Chiswick, London. Now he is charged with “having collected information of a kind that could probably be used by someone who carries out or plans a terrorist act”. The last time news visited the media house of Iran International in London, it was surrounded by armored vehicles. Photo: Gry Blekastad Almås Vedkomande is said to have been stopped when he took a photo of someone who worked there, according to Amini, who has been in contact with several of the employees since the incident. She believes the threat is similar to those Iran has made before, which she believes Britain’s reaction is now normalizing. – If you ask me personally, I think the UK could handle this better. They could choose to take care of freedom of expression. If a school is threatened by a terrorist, do they close the school, or do they try to deal with the terrorist threats? – What has happened shows that Iran can do it. They can bully journalists and the media abroad and get results, even when they live in a free country. I think it’s terrible. Iranian assassination groups have long threatened several of the journalists at the media house in Chiswick. Photo: Gry Blekastad Almås / news The police tell AFP that the advice they have given is “exceptional”. The anti-terrorist operation that has been built up until now is to be one of the largest British police have ever undertaken in connection with a private organisation. Head of the Oslo-based organization Iran Human Rights, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, sees the shutdown as a “political act” by the British authorities. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam is head of Iran Human Rights in Oslo. Photo: PETTER BERNTSEN / AFP – There is no doubt that this is based on pressure from the Iranian regime, and threats of terror, he says to news. – I find it very surprising that a country like Great Britain should not be able to protect a TV channel, and in other words also freedom of expression in its own country. Of the independent newspapers, all of which are based outside Iran, Iran International is considered the main source of information about what is going on inside the country, he says. – It is a channel that gives many different people with different political views the opportunity to express their opinion. We have not had anything like this before, and it is what the regime in Iran dislikes so much. – It is there that Iranians see that protests take place, listen to the families of those who have been killed, and see the photos that people send in. It is an irreplaceable information channel right now. Late last year, a fence was erected around the entire Iran International building in London. Photo: Gry Blekastad Almås Sharam Alghasi is from Iran, and professor of media sociology at Kristiania University College. He thinks that Iran International has been particularly good at highlighting parts of the opposition to developments in Iran, especially after the demonstrations broke out last September. Sharam Alghasi has a PhD in sociology, and knows a lot about Iranian politics and history. Photo: Cappelen Damm – Having said that, Iran International TV is also a very controversial channel, he says, and points to the Iranian regime’s debts for financial support from Saudi Arabia. – It is an established truth in Iran that the funding is most certainly linked to a state that is in opposition to the Iranian regime, he says. He still adds that this has not been documented, and that independent sources have therefore not established anything of the sort. Late last year, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) wrote that the Iranian regime had extended its fight against media criticism to newspapers and journalists based abroad. – Every day we see new restrictions against independent media and journalists, and the restrictions have extended beyond national borders, said leader Christophe Deloire. RSF also writes that Iran is now in third place in the world when it comes to jailing journalists, behind Eritrea and North Korea. When the BBC asked the Iranian intelligence minister, Etail Khatib, about the threats against Iran International, he said that any cooperation with the media house was seen as a threat to national security. Several of the presenters of Iran International are wanted on this poster in Tehran. Photo: Privat/Iran International He also threatened Britain for “propaganda”, and said the country would “suffer for its measures that have led to uncertainty”. The fact that the threats against the channel have now escalated fits into the regime’s broader strategy against such opposition voices, Alghasi believes. – They have become much more aggressive. They have become much more militant, and they have made various threats against various parts of the opposition and media that are not in the service of the regime. The latest wave of demonstrations in Iran started after the death of Mahsa Amini. There is no freedom of the press in Iran, but several independent newspapers are based abroad. Photo: WANA NEWS AGENCY / Reuters The increase in intensity started as a result of the demonstrations, he says further. These were triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, and have since expanded and become nationwide. The protesters are now demanding a complete regime change in Iran. – The Iranian regime has been very good at seeking out opposition parties. In fact, they kidnap from different countries. Kill them in France, in Germany, in Turkey. There are many examples. – But Iran International is established, and they have good tools. They are in several different places. So I think they will survive this here.

ttn-69

The threats against the media house from murder groups linked to the Iranian regime are said to have become so serious that it is no longer possible to protect the 200 employees at the channel, say British police.
