That’s what Håkon Bentsen Veholmen says. He is one of the people behind the non-profit organization “In The Same Boat”. Since 2017, the organization has cleared 1,250 tonnes of rubbish. Young volunteers from all over the world come to Norway to clean with them. But to be able to clear the world’s second longest coastline of full machinery this season, the organization needs funds. – There is enough plastic for everyone. It is not the plastic that is the limitation, but the financing. The organization now lacks money to pay staff, pay for fuel, food and other expenses that come with the beach cleaning mission. Four kroner = One meter cleaned This year, 30 million kroner is set aside for beach clean-up in the state budget, compared to 70 million a couple of years ago. There is thus a halving in recent years in money set aside for the clean-up. This means that the organization “In The Same Boat” can only utilize 60 per cent of its capacity. Håkon Bentsen Veholmen is responsible for arranging the personnel, vessels and equipment needed to run the organization “In The Same Boat”. Photo: Erik Waage / news – It is worrying that everyone agrees that beach litter is a big problem and at the same time the subsidy for this is reduced from year to year, says Veholmen. For every four kroner the organization receives, another meter is cleared. At the same time that thousands sign up for cleaning duty, the organisation’s boats lie in port and employees receive layoff notices. Arve Jaatun points out that it costs money to have someone who manages the clean-up, and among other things drives the rubbish away. He is project manager for marine litter in the Jæren Outdoor Council. He is aware that if they do not get enough money, there will be less clearing. – Nothing is free. For example, we spend a lot of money on buses to take students out on clean-up campaigns. If we don’t get that money, we get around 3,000 fewer people out to clean. Believes that business must take its share of the cake Aleksander Øren Heen, State Secretary in the Ministry of Climate and Environment, believes that such a cut is not lucky. State Secretary Aleksander Øren Heen Photo: CECILIE BERGAN STUEDAL – A tight state budget has meant that we have had to cut back on state licensing, says Heen. He points out that much of the waste that drifts ashore is from commercial activities, and believes that they should pick up part of the bill. Heen refers to the principle called “polluter pays” in Norway, and says that this is deeply rooted. – That’s why I’m happy that the business community is picking up a larger part of the bill through the Trade Environment Fund. There is growth in the allocations, he says. Handelens mijlofonds members (external link) sell over 80 percent of the carrier bags sold in Norway. For every bag sold, 1 kroner goes into the fund. Photo: Handelens Miljøfond Those who want to clean up must apply for money to cover the expenses they have for cleaning. – This year we will have two calls for tenders instead of one. So there will be one in the spring and a new one in the autumn. There is still hope for the beach cleaners to get funding for their projects, says Cecilie Lind, head of Handelens miljøfond.

ttn-69

– We have thousands of young people who want to help clean, but most get a no from us.
