Thus, it was the National Salaries Board that was given the task of determining the salaries of the teachers. However, the longest teacher’s strike in Norwegian history was not successful in its demands, and thus gets the collective agreement they were striking against. Junior school teacher Joakim Haugen, who was one of the first three to go on strike on 8 June in Bergen, is disappointed. – I think this decision means that the danger of strikes and new conflict is great, says he, who is also the main shop steward in the schools’ national confederation. – Has this deprived you of the desire to stand on the barricade again? – No not at all. It is not the case that if you lose, you should give up, says Haugen. The Education Association: – Trade Union Crushing The teachers have demanded from the tribunal that the salary settlement should take effect from 1 June last year, but the tribunal has decided to follow the principle that it applies from 27 September, says the decision from the National Salary Board. This means that the main collective agreement in the KS tariff area between KS and the other employee organizations will only come into effect after the strike has ended. – We are experiencing being deprived of the right to strike, says local team leader of the Education Association in Bergen, Bente Myrtveit. – I believe this is an attempt to crush trade unions, she adds. All the teachers who have been waiting for last year’s salary increases will now receive a salary supplement of between NOK 14,700 and 16,100, depending on length of education and experience, KS informs. Teachers with less than four years’ seniority receive an additional salary supplement of between NOK 5,000 and 21,200, writes NTB. DID NOT WIN: The teachers did not win the longest teachers’ strike in Norwegian history. Here is a photo of the main shop steward for the Education Association in Bodø, Trond Are Fjordtun, during a demonstration this autumn. SV voted against the forced wage board in the teachers’ strike. – The whole situation adds fuel to the unrest and distrust in Norwegian schools. I fear we will have fewer teachers in our classrooms in the future as a result of the government’s coercion and the high level of conflict, says SV’s knowledge policy spokesperson, Freddy André Øvstegård. Photo: Hallvard Norum / Hallvard Norum Fears of losing more teachers Myrtveit in the Education Association fires back at the government’s decision to end the strike. – It is very disappointing and is not at all in line with the same politicians’ wishes for a solid welfare state, with good education and qualified people at work, she says. – What could the outcome mean for a possible new strike? – Confidence in KS is equal to zero. They had a golden opportunity for reputation building before this year’s showdown. I cannot understand how KS and the tribunal have ended up with the idea that this is wise to offset against this year’s settlement, says Myrtveit. – Do you think we will lose more teachers because of this decision? – Yes, there is no doubt about that. Education Minister Tonje Brenna (Ap), does not want to be interviewed by news on Friday. The teachers’ strike started in Bergen before the summer holidays last year.
