It’s not the smell of fish. It smells like money! Directly translated from Norwegian to Northern Norwegian, it’s “fat” here, says Mira Le Paulsen. It is also the case for second-graders Jonette Larsen and Mina Fredrikke Junge Hansen, both from Tromsø. – Guaranteed! Of course it is, say the 17-year-olds who have chosen fishing and trapping and aquaculture respectively as majors at VG2. – I think many have begun to see that this is a short but demanding educational path to a high-paying profession. I also think that is why there have been many applicants, says Hansen. Head of subject at Senja upper secondary school, Torunn Mikalsen, says that ten years ago they did not have full classes. In Troms, they now have about twice as many applicants for the fisheries and aquaculture subjects as they have school places for. – We have a strong search for VG1. We don’t have room for more at school, here it’s cool on the wall. In addition, we must adapt to the industry’s capacity to take on apprentices, she says. Photo: Kari Anne Skoglund / Kari Anne Skoglund The growth is not just in Troms. On a national basis, the number of applicants for the VG2 fishing and trapping offer has gone from 135 for the 2019/2020 school year, to 274 in 2022. This has led to a battle for apprenticeships. Birthe Richardsen, project manager in the Training Office for Fisheries in Troms, says the capacity for apprenticeships on boats is full. – On the farming side, there are probably more places. On the aquaculture side, where we recently received the new diploma in aquaculture engineering, it will also be possible to increase apprenticeships in a while. But not on the fishing side. Not like today, she says. Project manager in the Training Office for Fisheries in Troms, Birthe Richardsen, is working to get more apprenticeship companies. Photo: Hans Ludvig Andreassen / news That is why we work continuously with new companies and shipping companies to get more apprenticeships. – We are trying to get new boats in as apprenticeships. We are trying to prevent the need to take on apprentices, especially on fishing boats. Pupils at Gibostad distribute fish in plastic tubs on board the boat “Skårungen”. Photo: Kari Anne Skoglund / news – Most are willing. It can be a bit difficult on smaller fishing boats due to the lot system. This means that the lot has to be distributed to everyone, and then part of the lot is given to the apprentice. That is the biggest problem. – All conditions are in place One of the companies highlighted in the industry when it comes to accepting apprentices is the group Nergård Havfiske AS. – We get loyal and skilled employees with the right skills. We have noticed a tremendous increase in interest in the field, and we do not believe that salary is the only reason. This is a future-oriented industry, also in terms of sustainability. The protein we use is one of the things that has the least carbon footprint, says managing director Tommy Holmøy. Kenneth Holmøy is general manager of Nergård Havfiske AS. They are happy about the growing interest from young people, and encourage the industry to welcome them. – All conditions are in place to accept apprentices, and that is useful for us. Good work is being done to take on apprentices in the industry. We take on board as many as we can, it is important for recruitment for the profession. We secure crew who can be with us for many years, he says and emphasizes that he is only speaking for the trawl fleet. Hard fight for apprenticeships Noah Albrigtsen is from Finnsnes and is among six apprentices on the Nergård fishing trawler “Senja”. He was among those who came through the eye of the needle. – It is difficult to get apprenticeships on the boats. I was quite lucky to get a place when I applied, he says. Photo: Håkon Iversen / news The second-year students at Senja upper secondary school are aware that there may be a battle for apprenticeships. – Yes, it will be. I, who go fishing and catching, have to apply to over 20 boats because there is such a high number of applicants. It will be another battle. But we get help from teachers, VIGO and well-known people, says Jonette Larsen. Mina Fredrikke Junge Hansen and Jonette Larsen Senja high school dept. Aquaculture is at least as popular as fishing and trapping. There are also several apprenticeships to choose from here. – We must apply for a minimum of five. But we will get enough apprenticeships in the end, believes Mina Fredrikke Junge Hansen. Cod, haddock, halibut and other sea fish are the dream career path for more and more young people. Photo: Kari Anne Skoglund / news – Have to work hard At the quay at Gibostad, the fisheries students come ashore several times a week with solid quantities of fish after fishing on the boat “Skårungen”. Among the students unloading haddock and cod is Miriam Hustad from Sommarøy. She still has a year and a half left at school before starting her apprenticeship. The fact that there is a battle for apprenticeships, especially on a boat, does not stop her from following her dream of becoming a fisherman. – I want to move south and try my hand at boating there. I know I can come back north and maybe get a job after that. In order to get my dream place, I have to persevere, get good grades, follow along and take the initiative to learn. In other words, make a solid effort now while we go to school. This career path is worth it! Miriam Hustad is studying VG1 natural farming at Senja upper secondary school.
