The Norwegian Health Authority was notified on 3 January 2023 of a serious incident at the hospital in Flekkefjord. One patient had previously had a prosthesis inserted after a femoral neck fracture. This had been out of position several times. Now the patient had fallen at home. According to the supervision case, this is what happened: In Flekkefjord, an attempt was made to get the prosthesis in place. But part of it came loose, and entered the soft parts. The state administrator writes in the notice from 1 February 2023: “Such a complicated condition, the orthopedists at SSF did not have the competence to operate and the hospital in Kristiansand was contacted. They didn’t have the capacity there…the patient was therefore immobilized…” The patient was laid up for several days with an unstable hip, and died. It was the doctor Jerlan Omarchanov who was responsible for many of them, but also other surgeons. Omarchanov was not a trained orthopedist, something the management knew about. Jerlan Omarchanov worked for eleven years in Flekkefjord, without being a qualified orthopedist. He hurt many people for life. He was eventually moved to the hospital in Kristiansand, where the botched operations continued. The CEO of S\u00f8rlandet Hospital, Nina Mevold, was involved in the transfer herself. So far, 64 patients have received compensation for serious injuries, but several have been confirmed to have been operated on incorrectly. S\u00f8rlandet Hospital has been sentenced to a fine of NOK one million for gross system failure. The rationale was that the management could have avoided more people being injured if the doctor had been stopped earlier. New malpractices In the notification to S\u00f8rlandet Hospital in this case, it is stated: “The state administrator must also investigate whether the business has worked systematically for quality improvement and patient safety…” In Flekkefjord, there have been several serious malpractices and supervisory cases after Omarchanov left. Among other things, one patient died of a blood clot after being sent home from the emergency department. One of the orthopedists there is now being charged by the police after damaging the foot of a man who came in with several fractures in his heel. There is also an ongoing supervisory case where a patient had to be sent to Oslo University Hospital after a prosthetic operation. Tell us Hi!
