There they asked, among other things: “what is your attitude towards Russian/Belarusian participation in international sports events?” There is great agreement, if the figures are to be believed. 88 of the 110 NISO members who answered the question believe that Russian and Belarusian athletes should be banned until further notice. That amounts to a percentage of 80 percent. 13.6 per cent of those who responded to the survey think they should be allowed to participate, while 6.4 per cent have no opinion. SHOWING FIGURES: Niso leader Erlend Hanstveit. Photo: Henrik Myhr Nielsen – The feedback is in line with the dialogue we have had with the athletes since the war started. There is no change as we have the register and the survey also shows that, says Niso leader Erlend Hanstveit to news. – Natural to discuss There are a total of 138 people taking part in the survey, of which 32.6 per cent are former active athletes. On 1 January 2022 it was approx. 1,500 Niso members divided into handball, football, ice hockey and individual sports. Of the union’s members, there are therefore 110, just under 10 per cent, who have answered the question about their attitude to Russian/Belarusian participation in international sporting events. – Those numbers are high enough that it is a representative sample that has responded. In accordance with the dialogue we have with shop stewards in our clubs and organisations, we are confident that what the survey conveys is a good picture, says Hanstveit. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) indicated last week that a large majority of athletes’ representatives want to look at the possibilities of allowing Russians and Belarusians to participate. In that case, this must be done based on strict criteria, such as that the athletes in question compete as neutrals, according to the committee. The figures from the Niso members show a slightly different point of view. – The IOC on a global level is not up to me to assess, but we are quite confident that there are not that great differences in the position of the Norwegian members and members from other Nordic countries, for example. Taking care of Ukrainian athletes at the same time as opening up to Russian athletes is simply not feasible as the situation is in Europe now, says Hanstveit. FRESH NUMBERS: Informs that several Norwegian athletes want a continuation of the Russian ban. Photo: NTB/news Responding to numbers The disagreements have caused, among other things, that there has been a storm around Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen, the head of the Norwegian athletes’ committee, recently. Jacobsen is said to have advocated the inclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes during a meeting with the International Olympic Committee. Several athletes have reacted to the handling, including rower Kjetil Borch, who said frankly that his trust in Jacobsen was seriously weakened. Combined runner Espen Bjørnstad described it as a shock. Photo: Terje Pedersen Several other Norwegian athletes also seem to agree with that position, if the recent Niso figures are to be believed. news has shown the figures from the survey to Jacobsen, who replies as follows that a large percentage in the Niso survey want the banning of Russian and Belarusian athletes. – Said athletes are banned until further notice. The athletes’ committee follows the ongoing processes in the international sports movement. When these have been concluded, we will take a position on this through a broad survey among Norwegian top performers. Beyond that, we have no comment, she writes. Hanstveit says he is open to passing on and discussing the figures with the athletes’ committee. – We have always had a good dialogue with the athletes’ committee. It may be natural for us to discuss this with them later, he says. Clear speech The IOC has previously stated that they want to stand in solidarity with Ukrainian athletes, while at the same time opening up the possibility for Russian/Belarusian athletes to participate as “neutral athletes”. In the survey, Niso asks its members: How realistic is this to achieve? There it appears that 49.9 per cent consider this to be very unlikely, while 2.7 per cent have answered that this is very realistic. CLEAR: Jan Petter Saltvedt is ready in his speech after seeing the figures from Niso. Photo: ALEM ZEBIC / news news’s sports commentator Jan Petter Saltvedt believes that Norwegian athletes have taken a very clear position. – It should form the basis for what is the public attitude towards Sports Norway in the future. Norwegian athletes will not compete against Russian or Belarusian athletes until the war is over. Period, says Saltvedt.

ttn-69

news has gained access to the responses to the survey sent out by the players’ association Niso to its members last week.
