The commission does not believe that Norway has enough power to reach the climate targets for 2030. An industrial area of 4,000 acres is being built in Bamble, which will need enormous amounts of power – green power. No to windmills But in 2021 Bamble municipality made it a decision of principle not to have so much as a windmill. The decision met with opposition. The commission’s proposal to build smaller facilities, so-called “near wind” in industrial areas and along the roads, may have changed the mayor’s opinion. – I think it is appropriate to have energy available very close to where the development is taking place. It’s exciting, says mayor Hallgeir Kjelldal. Are you positive about the construction of smaller wind turbines along roads and in industrial areas? Positive for “near wind” The industrial area in Bamble cannot be powered by wind alone, but it can contribute. – A lot of green power is needed here. More power than a few windmills can provide, but it can help create the enthusiasm we need to develop this area, says the mayor. The construction of near wind farms will leave a smaller footprint on nature. – Are you willing to adjust the decision in principle? – We have to look at that, and I also hope that the municipal council is also inclined to do the same. The world has moved forward, says Kjelldal. POWER: Wind turbines near infrastructure in Nauen, Germany. The company must cut CO₂ emissions by 1.3 million tonnes. That is as much as the emissions from 500,000 fossil-fuel cars. POWER: The plant at Yara and the petrochemical company INEOS in Bamble requires a lot of power. Photo: Nils Fridtjof Skumsvoll / news To achieve this, there is a need for as much electricity as 150 large wind turbines produce in a year. Sverre Gotaas, managing director of Herøya industrial park, believes that it will be easier to get acceptance for wind turbines when they are placed on industrial areas. – These nearby wind turbines are much smaller and will not tower over the terrain. The power from there will be suitable for covering the surrounding buildings, but the companies are still dependent on the large power plants, says Gotaas. The Energy Commission proposes that an increased share of the income from wind power should go to the host municipalities and that 15 per cent of the ground rent tax to the state from the individual wind power plant should accrue to the affected municipality.

ttn-69

On Wednesday, the government received advice from the Energy Commission on a new climate policy.
