Physical ailments have put an end to the good results. Johansson had no chance of making it to the final round on Saturday, and he asked not to be interviewed. On Sunday he made it further, but it ended with 23rd place. Now the experienced ski jumper from Lillehammer opens up about the recurring problems with back prolapse and a constantly numb right leg. – When you feel that a foot is lazing away in a very emotion-based sport, I know that it is sometimes extremely challenging to keep the focus in the right place. And you get stressed by a lot less than that, an open Johansson tells news. PLAGES: Robert Johansson loses feeling in his right leg. Photo: Geir Olsen \/ NTB – The body that stops me In 2021, Johansson underwent her first prolapse operation. The following year he had to withdraw from the WC due to yet another prolapse – and a new back operation was required. In an interview with Aftenposten in late summer, he looked forward to the upcoming season. But even after two back operations, Lillehamringen is not rid of the problems, which returned again around New Year. The 32-year-old does not hide that it has been frustrating to deal with a body that does not want to play in teams. – There is a bit of fear mixed in with that. It’s awful to lose contact with all the muscles. Then you lose all power, too. The ability to tighten an ankle \u2013 it’s quite important when you’re doing what you’re doing, explains Johansson. – Do you get mad or scared? – A bit of everything. I don’t know what I should have done differently. That’s what probably annoys me the most. After all, I’ve spent all my time making sure I do exactly what I have to in order to get, first and foremost, a good back. Get your body to cooperate, but also be able to jump on skis. Then it’s the body that stops me. It’s some damn shit, replies an honest jumper. FRUSTRATED: Robert Johansson is apprehensive and uncertain about the future. Photo: Geir Olsen \/ NTB – Looks like someone has injected a liquid, the 32-year-old says he doesn’t feel any pain in his back, but he feels a loss of feeling in his right leg during the interview. He explains that the feelings disappear little by little. It can happen, for example, during a warm-up or after a long car trip where he has been sitting a little too badly. – You are a bit hypersensitive to a number of things that you shouldn’t be overly sensitive to when you are doing this, says Johansson. The changes in the right leg are small, but noticeable to the jumper: – The strange thing about it is that it feels like someone has injected a liquid. Just insert a syringe from just below the knee and chill. The calf feels larger, more dead. There are no super big differences in terms of power, but you can see small differences. But it is the small differences that you sometimes feel very well when you feel how the body feels. – I’ve tried to run an approach without feeling my right foot, and I have no plans to do that again, says Johansson. 2021: The silver medal from Oberstdorf in March 2021 is Johansson’s best WC memory. Photo: Lise \u00c5serud \/ NTB Opening to post Johansson is frustrated by how long the convalescence process is taking and is uncertain about the future. He clearly has faith in what he does in terms of preventive training and treatment. – The problem is that I don’t know how long it will take before it gets really good. It is a test of patience, when you feel that a change should have happened quite quickly. At the same time, I feel that I am on the right track. – Are you considering giving up at the end of the season? – It may well happen. We’ll see. As long as I had been “happy” with the decision, I think I would have been happy, says Johansson and continues: – At one point or another, you have to think like that. Whether it has arrived yet, I don’t know. I really want to make my body work, and I’m willing to try a lot and go the extra mile. The problem is that the season is in full swing. At least I don’t have time to go home, lie on the sofa and wait for it to pass. Now it is almost time for the WC, and Johansson has clear goals for herself and the team. He stands with individual WC silver in large hill (2021) and Olympic bronze in both large and normal (2018). – So it is very tempting to win an individual gold as well, but I think it would have been really cool to win a gold with the team. This applies to both mix and team competition for the boys, says Johansson. NEW TEAM GOLD?: Here from the Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018.
