It has become accustomed to climbing into boats and lying down there to relax. As a result, several boat owners have suffered damage to their boats. Earlier in June, a RIB boat was destroyed after a visit by the walrus. About to die Monday this week it was about to go wrong when the walrus wrapped itself in the rope from a boat at a pier. Nature photographer Per Ole Halvorsen had the “Freya” cut loose. Now it has been decided that the walrus should be moved. Initially, a floating jetty will be laid out. The walrus will have this as a temporary residence. This is confirmed by Olav Lekved, communications adviser in the Directorate of Fisheries, to news on Tuesday. – There is a floating jetty provided by the municipality, which will lie a little low in the water and withstand up to a ton. The decision was made after dialogue with the Institute of Marine Research. Hope it will thrive better on the floating jetty – We have found that this is the best we can do in the short term. Hopefully the walrus will thrive on the floating pier, a little away from the harbor area and where people thrive. The emergency is about getting him away from the marina in Kragerø, says Lekved. Over the next few weeks, it will be considered whether the floating pier should be hoisted on board a ship and transported further up the north-east coast. – We have to get back to this, he says. The walrus has been splashing around in the Kragerø archipelago since last spring. It has also been a trip to Sarpsborg. Mayor of Kragerø, Grunde Wegard Knudsen, has been concerned that more serious situations will arise. Lekved does not know that similar solutions with walruses have been tried in Norway before. He published a post about the case on Monday night, which has created enormous engagement on social media. – This is good. In any case, it will go north in the long run. If she gets some help along the way, it’s just great.
