Now I just have to give up the World Cup altogether and focus on the WC. And take time off, says Riiber. Jarl Magnus Riiber was unsure whether he would continue to participate in the Seefeld triple after a fourth place in Friday’s race. Riiber has been struggling with illness recently, but wanted to also try his hand at Saturday’s jumping section before he decided on the way forward. There he jumped 95.5 meters and ended up far behind. – That was what I needed, he told national team coach Jan Schmid shortly after the jump. But in addition to jumping short, he was also disqualified as the jump suit had torn. – It is heavy. It helped me make that decision. I feel a little relieved, in many ways, says Riiber to news. IN THE GROUND: Jarl Magnus Riiber in the gliding in Saturday’s competition. Photo: Andreas Schaad / AP – A lot of strange things happened. I had a big hole in my suit. I felt it crack when I sat down in position, says Riiber further, and confirms that he will also not field the prestigious Seefeld triple in Sunday’s race. Sports manager Ivar Stuan says that it was a seam that had come up, and adds that “it can happen”. – Who is responsible for the suit falling apart? – It is the athlete himself together with our people who sews. Tom Hilde (jumping coach for the combined men) probably also feels a little bit about it, says Stuan. Moan critical: – It’s gambling Magnus Moan is a guest in news’s winter studio. The previous combined profile is clear that Riiber should not have started at all: – It is gambling. There is a short time before the WC, says Moan. The first competition for the men’s combined ski WC in Planica is on 24 February. – If the disease now takes hold even more in the body, then he will start to have a bad time. When you are sick, your body needs rest, says Moan. The living room is not as concerned. – The time to retire is right. He still has quite a bit of time to get ready for the WC, says Stuan. Riiber himself tells news that he will not compete in the World Cup weekend in Oberstdorf next week. He also thinks he won’t be seen in Schonach in two weeks and thus the next competition will be in Planica, he says. – As it is now, there are many points that will be lost. Then it is an easy choice to just cut it short and focus fully on the WC, says Riiber. Victory for the home hope Riiber was initially set on fighting for his fifth overall victory in the World Cup, and he does not hide how hard it is to see that dream crushed: – It’s tougher for me to give it up than if I got the crown before the Olympics. It’s tougher, this here, said Riiber ahead of the race, and added: The Norwegian still leads the World Cup after Saturday’s race, 28 points ahead of Johannes Lamparter. – It’s a little sad. Every athlete wants to fight against the best, says Lamparter about Riiber. When asked if he believes that Riiber is now completely out of the running for an overall victory, he replies: – We’ll see. At the moment it looks good to me. The Austrian took a superb victory on Saturday, winning ahead of the Germans Vinzenz Geiger and Julian Schmid. Should he win the Seefeld triple, he will take another 200 World Cup points. Photo: Andreas Schaad / AP Jens Lurås Oftebro won the first race in the Seefeld triple, but didn’t get it right in the jumping hill on Saturday and started over a minute behind Lamparter in the 10 kilometer long cross-country race. There he opened well and keyed in for a few seconds, before he was brought in by several others. However, he finished strongly and became the best Norwegian performer in eighth place.

ttn-69

– In many ways, it was nice that this race made the choice for me further.
