The dream is to study law in Bergen. But at the kitchen table in Larvik, the dream seems distant. – I will probably have to take subjects next year as well, says the 22-year-old, who has been our private student for one year already. Vestli dropped out of high school two years before the corona pandemic, and at that time had an exam in the usual way. He is one of several students who now do not get into the study he wants, because the grade point average has jumped from him. He thinks the reason is that the graduating students during the corona pandemic did not have an exam. – They did not have to take the exam, and one usually goes down in grades on the exam, says Vestli. – How do you know that? – We heard it from the teachers, and my average went down when I had the exam myself, he says. Important margins An analysis from the Norwegian Directorate of Education from 2020 supports Vestli’s claim. Almost half of the students in their survey received a lower grade for the written exam than for the standpoint. In addition, the average grade went up in almost all common subjects in 2019–20. The analysis by the Norwegian Directorate of Education shows that it may have been an advantage for the coronary school that they missed the exam. – Considering the grade point average they will use to compete for study places, it will clearly have had a positive effect for some students, says Hilde Hjorth-Johansen who is a senior adviser in the Directorate of Education. 160,000 kroner on exams Vestli is not alone in being a prisoner as a private individual. news has talked to several students who are now taking up subjects in order to be able to study for their dream job. – I counted on it, and came to the conclusion that I have spent over 160,000 kroner on taking up subjects, says Marthe Strøm Thoresen. The 23-year-old has used the last three years of his life to increase his grade point average. Her dream is to study medicine. Thoresen admits that she had to take up subjects in the first place. But she expected to spend a year as a private student. Max two. Now she will most likely have to take subjects for the fourth year in a row. Marthe Strøm Thoresen was in good spirits on her way to another private exam in May this year. Photo: Privat Thoresen is sure that she would already have been studying medicine if it had not been for the coronary heart disease that failed the exam. – All my friends have studied for many years, while I sit here and take up subjects. I thought it was heavy. One gets the urge to give up the dream, says Thoresen. Want solution Thorsen and Vestli had five exams left. Both experienced that their average went down as a result of the exams. Now they want politicians to change the rules of the game. – One could, for example, divide the study places 50/50 between corona students and ordinary students. It would have been fairer, says Thorsen. Ole Petter Vestli also demanded that the government take action. – They can, for example, refrain from counting on our exam grades when admitting to higher education, says Vestly. The Ministry of Education and Research states that they are on the case. – Under the previous government, a committee was set up to look at the integrity of the admission regulations, and come up with proposals for changes, says State Secretary Oddmund Løkensgard Hoel (Sp). Photo: HØGSKULEN I SOGN OG FJORDANE Fear of the future Nevertheless, the State Secretary believes that it is not just the corona that is to blame for high grade points. – I understand that it can be hard not to get into the dream study, but the increased point limits on some educations come most of all from applicant records for several years in a row. When more people apply, the competition for places in the most sought-after studios increases. Thoresen and Vestli think it will be too easy to blame that studios are popular. They also fear that the situation will get worse for those who leave after the corona. – They must compete exclusively with corona balls. None of them have had an exam on VG1 or VG2 either. Then they suddenly have to have four exams in VG3, says Vestli. Every single decimal counts when one struggles to get into the most popular studios. In the application process, the grades are converted to points. 0.1 on average is the same as one point. In the table below, you can see the development of the points needed to enter a selection of studies. The points in the table only show the limits for ordinary quota. These are the point limits Vestly and Thoresen are trying to reach. Vestli lacks 1 competition point to enter jurisprudence in Bergen where the limit is 61.5. The points limit has risen by 2.3 points since Vestli dropped out of high school in 2018. Thoresen is missing about 1.5 points to get into medicine. The limits are different for those who apply for a first-time diploma. The numbers in the table are taken from Coordinated admissions.

ttn-69

Ole Petter Vestli has seen his life on hold.
