They date from the 13th century, and were found during the excavation of Bryggen in the 1950s. – These are materials we want to take extra good care of, says Åshild Thorsen, curator at the University of Bergen. Today, many will probably disagree, but in the 50s, one object was registered as a “nail”. A nail is a cylindrical piece of wood, not unlike a nail, which is used to fasten wood together. For example, it was common to use rivets when building wooden boats. But this item looks like something else. – It can be discussed whether it is right, says Thorsen. Nagle? The object on the left was registered as a nail. But the other two were registered as “phallos”, ie penis. Photo: Roza Sadik Bawan / news She believes the object was registered as a nail because sexuality was taboo in the 50s. It was not until the 1970s that section 213 of the Penal Code was repealed. Before this, it was forbidden for men to have sex together. Two of the three objects that were excavated were categorized as “phalluses”, ie wooden penises. Covered with history The object is part of the exhibition Skeiv historie at the University Museum in Bergen. . This especially applies to sexuality and queer history, she says. Must have stuck well Bjørn Andre Widvey, consultant at the University of Bergen, is also fascinated by the story of the “nail”. – If it was used for a nail, then in that case what was nailed must have stuck very well. It is quite large, says Bjørn Andre Widvey, consultant at the University of Bergen. Photo: Henrik Follesø Egeland / Skeivt Arkiv – Someone challenged the legislation This year it is marked that it is 50 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality with a skewed cultural year. – I think it is interesting that stories like this have always been there, but have been covered over. We see right from the Gulating Act onwards that there has been legislation that regulates this type of sexuality. This means that it existed and that someone challenged the legislation as it had to be regulated, says Widvey. The University Museum in Bergen has opened an exhibition in connection with the celebration. In the exhibition where researchers from different disciplines reflect on how research has helped to normalize sexuality, gender and love.
