So what should you do if you have invested your savings in mutual funds but have no idea what a recession is? Most likely nothing. Photo: Synne Sørenes / news – The best advice is to think long-term Nina is passionate about finances, and gives advice to both new and slightly more experienced fund savers. Her real name is Jonina Reynisdottir, but she goes by the name “Invest with Nina” on social media. Several of her financial videos on TikTok have hundreds of thousands of views. She notices that more people are now making contact, because they are worried that the share price will fluctuate. – Especially those who are completely fresh. It feels uncomfortable to see the shares and funds go down, she says. But those who have been in the game for a while, usually have a little more ice in their stomachs. – They have seen fluctuations in the market before, says Nina. She has clear advice for anyone who has recently started saving in stocks and mutual funds. – Sit still in the boat, and do not act out of panic, stress or discomfort. We have been through several recessions and declines in the past. What is happening now has happened many times before. She believes that long-term perspective is important, and that very few people have good conditions for timing the market. – The best advice is to think long-term. If you think 10-30 years ahead, it does not have much to say what is happening today. There comes a time when things look different. Photo: Ekaterina Krogstad Recommends index fund Esben Sirnes is an associate professor at the Norwegian School of Management at UiT – Norway’s Arctic University. He is also aware of what is the smartest thing to do right now. – The general advice is to sit still in the boat, says Sirnes. – There is rarely anything to gain from trying to time the market. It only gives an extra risk that you go in and out at the wrong time. However, he has some advice if you want the lowest possible risk. – You should have as wide an investment as possible. Preferably both a Norwegian fund and a foreign fund. Then the risk of you losing money is lower, says Sirnes. He also recommends that you check the management costs and administration fees for the fund you invest your money in. – You should try to find the funds that have the lowest possible management fee, and preferably an index fund, says Sirnes. Associate Professor at the UiT School of Business, Esben Sirnes, recommends having ice in your stomach. Photo: August Hansen / news This is an index fund This is how Associate Professor Esben Sirnes explains what an index fund is: Index: The portfolio of the average investor. Benchmark index: The portfolio as a fund is measured in relation to. A Norwegian fund will, for example, have an index linked to the Oslo Stock Exchange as a benchmark index. The same stock exchange often has several indices, such as the index for the largest companies (OBX), the broad index for all companies (OSEBX) and indices for different industries. The index closest to the fund’s mandate is used as a benchmark index. Index fund: A fund that aims to achieve a return equal to a specific index. For an index fund, the proportion to be invested in various shares is determined by the composition of the index. An active fund makes its own decisions on the composition of the portfolio. Why is a low management fee important? Let’s set up a simplified, hypothetical calculation: You have invested 100,000 kroner in a fund that provides a 5 percent return every year for 30 years, without you withdrawing or depositing more money. Then you check the amount after 30 years. Then you would have a little over 430,000 kroner in the account, if there were no fees. But if the fund had an annual management fee of 3 percent, you would only have 180,000 in your account. Had the management fee been 1 percent, you would have 324,000 kroner. Energy and raw materials But which stocks might you want to invest in, if you can bear some risk? Sirnes believes that there are some stocks that stand out in today’s market. – It is of course a bit tempting to say shares in the energy and raw materials sectors, but it is entirely possible that most of the gain there has already been taken out. However, he does not recommend newly saved stock speculators to take big chances. – Hunting for tricky things to do, often turns out to be not so clever. A good number of bitcoin investors can probably sign it, says Sirnes. Nina is followed by several thousand on social media. There she talks mainly about economics. Photo: Øyvind Sandnes / news Other sources of income Nina thinks it is wiser to look for other things to invest in – if you want to make money in the short term – than to try your luck in the stock market. – Askjer may not give as much return in the short term. Investing in real estate will provide a more steady return in the form of rental income, especially now that rental prices have risen sharply, she says. But she has a few tips if you prefer stocks over real estate. – Then I might want to look a little at global index funds or at stocks in sectors that normally do well during a recession, Nina says. She also believes it is important to check what types of funds you have or should invest in. – You should check what types of shares the fund has. Then it is wise to look at which countries and sectors they are located in, and how these have done so over time, says Nina. However, if you have made a good investment, which you think will ride out the storm, she recommends that you spend your energy on other things than checking the stock price hour by hour. – Then you should rather look for other sources of income that can strengthen your financial position, or look at how to cut unnecessary expenses, says Nina

ttn-69

Have you used the corona pandemic to invest in stocks and mutual funds, or thrown yourself into the trend this spring?
