And whether they are willing to change their eating habits. The results show that many people are positive about such a change – yet few actually implement it. Why is it like that? According to the researchers, the answer is quite simple: They simply do not know what a sustainable diet entails. The finding was surprising, says Professor Katherine Appleton. – We originally intended to look at how we could encourage people to eat more beans and legumes. But we quickly discovered that people still don’t know enough about why this is important, she says in a press release. The new study is published in the journal Appetite. 21 in-depth interviews To find answers, the researchers conducted 21 in-depth interviews with young participants – both women and men. The participants came from different living conditions and had different eating habits. All were British and over 18 years of age. The researchers believed that a qualitative approach would be the best to get detailed and personal answers in such a context. Everyone had to answer a number of different questions, including about their own understanding of a sustainable diet. The findings then showed that many of them were unsure of the term itself. Some of the participants had no knowledge that this meant taking our planet into account. Many were also unsure of which food choices one should make in order to live more sustainably. Several of the participants were willing to make small changes, but very few wanted to cut meat from their diet. Now the researchers believe that more must be done to increase awareness among the population. The experts believe that you should make conscious choices when eating fish and seafood. Do not eat farmed fish too often, is the recommendation. So how sustainable is such a salmon burger? Photo: Tone Rieber-Mohn \/ news A big impact on our environment Diet, production of food, as well as the export and import of food products affect the climate to a large extent. Previous studies have suggested that as much as 30 percent of environmental impacts in Europe occur as a result. It is also more or less generally accepted that the consumption of meat entails a greater burden on the environment. Nevertheless, there is not enough knowledge about this topic, believe the researchers behind the new study. – It seems that most people understand that flying less, leaving the car and sorting rubbish is sustainable. But not everyone is aware that changing their diet can also make a difference, explains Katherine Appleton, who is a researcher at the University of Bournemouth. What should be on the plate if you are to make a sustainable choice? Many people are unsure about that, according to a new study. Photo: Frank May \/ NTB scanpix A worst thing Daniel Moran is a researcher at NTNU. Together with a number of colleagues, he recently completed a study where they looked at the impact of food production on the climate and environment in the world. Here, the researchers conclude that this is the biggest threat to biological diversity, as well as one of the worst drivers of the climate crisis. Because by the time the food reaches our table, it has traveled a long way. For the first time, they have managed to produce digital maps that show the pressure the global food system has on the environment. – There are many different foods on the planet, and many ways to produce them. The consequences are manifold and difficult to calculate. By gaining a better understanding of the negative consequences, we can achieve more environmentally efficient production, he says in a press release. From beige (least) to red (most), the map shows the overall pressure food production has on the environment. The situation is worst in China and India. Photo: Halpern, BS, Frazier, M., Verstaen This is how you and I can contribute Anja Bakken Riise is the leader of Framtiden i v\u00e6re hande. She believes young people today are growing up in a society with more information and discussion about what we eat. – If young people do not think about what a sustainable diet is, there is no doubt that awareness of eating less meat and more plant-based food has risen over the years. It was not many years ago that vegetarianism was seen as something strange, and it was difficult to get hold of alternatives to meat, she says to news. Riise has some simple advice for people who want to eat more sustainably. The easiest thing is to eat more vegetables, either as pure vegetarian meals or as a larger element in other dishes with fish or meat. It doesn’t have to be difficult! For example, you can replace half of the minced meat in the Friday taco with a packet of beans. One of the most important things we can do is eat our food. Reduce food waste by buying the right amount of food, using leftovers and using your senses to check whether food is still good to eat. Although you and I can do a lot, we must not put all the responsibility on the individual. The grocery chains must also take responsibility. They influence our eating habits. For example, when they dump the price of meat, people are lured into the store. It is no wonder then that many people choose food that is neither good for their health nor the environment. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines a sustainable diet as follows: It is a diet that has an impact on the environment and that contributes to food and nutrition security. Such a diet helps create a healthy life for current and future generations. Anja Bakken Riise believes that many people experience the joy of eating more varied food, and in a way that is healthy for both health and the environment. The sum of it has a lot to say for the environment.
