Brad Pitt is in rough weather these days. The conflict with ex-wife Angelina Jolie, after the divorce in 2019, lasts and lasts. There are feuds inside and outside the courtroom, over custody of the couple’s six children and over the future of a French vineyard the couple own together. Pitt has sued Jolie for selling off her share of the vineyard without consulting him. In the autumn, it became known that Jolie is filing a counter-suit, where she describes in detail an incident on board a private plane in 2016. Rumors have been circulating for several years, but now the details are emerging. According to Jolie, there was an argument between the two on board the plane which escalated so that the children tried to intervene. She claims that Pitt had then physically attacked both the children and Jolie herself, when she tried to stop him. Then, according to Jolie, he should have choked one of the children and beaten one of the others. This is said to have been the trigger for her filing for divorce herself just a few days later. Pitt’s representatives claim that Jolie is fabricating events and point out that the FBI chose not to pursue the case when she reported it. But with such serious allegations hanging over him, Pitt’s reputation is in trouble, right? Or? Well. Rather, the point is that Pitt saw the storm coming from afar, and found the down jacket in time. In 2019, he starred in Quentin Tarantino’s blockbuster “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood”, and quite quickly the film town began to mutter that Pitt could be eligible for his first Oscar with this. In the months that followed, Pitt pulled off the feat of working so hard to get that Oscar, without ever seeming like he was straining. He turned up at all the parties and all the award ceremonies in the run-up to Oscar night. Whenever he won something, he gave well-worded, witty speeches, tailored to the occasion and delivered with charm and perfect timing. The usually private film star posed for long portrait interviews, where he was open about his battle against his inner demons. He spoke, among other things, about how he had realized that he had an alcohol problem, and that he had sought help from Alcoholics Anonymous. He was beautiful without seeming vain, masculine without seeming posturing. Since then, he had floated seemingly effortlessly at the absolute top star level. Now he obviously realized that he had a task. He had to make the world fall in love with him all over again. And we haven’t even gotten to Jennifer Aniston. Around the turn of the millennium, hardly any couple was as famous as Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. She was the audience favorite from the TV hit “Friends for life” with a down-to-earth, girl-next-door vibe. He was already one of the world’s biggest movie stars, who had been voted “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine twice. They married in 2000, and separated five years later, after Pitt had met Angelina Jolie on the set of the action comedy ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith\u201d. It would turn out that people were so heavily invested in this triangular drama that all involved would be confronted with this in interviews for decades to come. This particularly applied to Jennifer Aniston, who, even after new relationships, a new marriage and a new divorce, was still portrayed as Brad Pitt’s scorned wife. He even seemed to want to hold her when she turned to leave. The Internet roared. Fantasies about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston getting back together ran wild. Heavy media wrote long analyzes of the pictures, and wondered what was the cause of the virus, whether it perhaps had to do with a longing for a return to the nineties, when the world seemed safer and everyone knew who the biggest celebrities were. Would Brad Pitt really like that Oscar? Surely. Could it be that the hug he gave Aniston was an expression of spontaneous excitement for someone he had been close to? Yeah. But there may have been other reasons as well. The biggest movie stars are surrounded by photographers and paparazzi at almost all times. They know very well that what they do in front of the cameras is immediately broadcast to the world. When they don’t want to be seen, they have their tricks to become invisible. They huddle behind large sunglasses and under baseball caps, hurrying from the car into the restaurant. When they walk forward smiling and straight in front of a crackling wall of cameras, and make a rare, public and loving gesture, they know what will happen. The media-savvy Pitt would have been well aware that the hug would trigger an avalanche of collective nostalgia, reminding audiences how much they had loved both Aniston and him. No one knows what really happened on board the private plane with Jolie and the children. She may be exaggerating, he may be misleading. But enough people out there are convinced that Brad Pitt, the smiling, humble, relaxed Brad Pitt, could not do such a thing. On social media, it is becoming clear that Angelina Jolie is the one who is fighting against the odds. The opponents are a crowd of Pitt fans who are more than willing to come up with sharp characterizations of her. It is reminiscent of when Amber Heard was trolled to pieces during the trial against her ex-husband Johnny Depp last spring. Of course Pitt won his oscar in 2020. Maybe he will win this time too.
