Here are nine tips for those going over the winter mountain – news Vestland

“I’m driving home for Christmas. Oh, I can’t wait to see those faces». Many of the Christmas songs are about traveling home for Christmas and there are probably many who these days have Chris Rea’s Christmas song “Driving home for Christmas” on the system while they are driving home for Christmas. Perhaps you are going over a mountain pass for the first time? Maybe it’s column driving. Maybe you drive an electric car? Then there are several things to think about. Here you get good tips from car repairer Bjørn Lægreid, known from the TV series “Vinterveiens helter”” and from adviser Jan Harry Svendsen in the Norwegian Automobile Association (Naf). Bilbergar Bjørn Lægreid has good advice for you who are going over the winter mountains. Photo: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TV / ITV STUDIOS NORWAY AS How to prepare for the trip: Check the weather report The first thing you should check is the weather. Please stay updated on yr. – If very bad weather has been reported, you should make an assessment as to whether you are going to take the trip or can postpone it, says Svendsen. Full battery or full tank Make sure you have a full tank or a fully charged battery before you travel. Feel free to check the Naf map for an overview of charging and fuel stations. If you have an electric car, it’s a good idea to find the charger closest to the mountain. Run the battery warm before charging. Then you spend the shortest possible time on charging. It is also important to remember that you will drive shorter distances with the electric car in winter compared to summer. Svendsen says that in the range tests for Naf there are quite big differences between summer driving and winter driving for electric cars. – Electric cars do not tolerate the cold very well, so it is important that they are fully charged at all times, says Lægreid. On NAF’s travel planner, you can check where the nearest charging station is. Illustration: Screenshot NAF Have a torch and spade easily accessible Have a torch that does not depend on electricity from the car. Please have a shovel in case you get stuck. Have and reflective vest easily available. – It is also important to have good and clean lights on the car. Fill up with flushing fluid that tolerates freezing temperatures, says Lægreid. Warm clothes and winter shoes, food and drink – Make sure you bring warm clothes for everyone, and that they are easily accessible, says Svendsen. If there is waiting and queuing, it may take longer than you think. Food and hot drinks can be decisive. Not least for impatient children. And with the blood sugar in place, it is easier to maintain the good atmosphere on board. Then the driver can concentrate on driving safely. In January, motorist Jenny Dalvik sat by the barrier at Kvænangsfjellet on the E6 and waited for the queue. Photo: Raymond Karlsen Stay up to date Feel free to check traffic information from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. On days with a lot of traffic, there can be a long wait to get into the queue. It is therefore a good idea to check traffic reports and consider other driving routes if possible. Cars in a queue and waiting for a column on Riksveg 7 Hardangervidda. Photo: Jon Kenneth Heltne Take your time – Don’t stress. It is difficult to know how long the trip will take in winter, says Lægreid. The weather and driving can suddenly change. In December last year, around 2,500 cars were stuck in a queue on the E18 at Tvedestrand due to snowy weather. Motorists queued for several hours and the cars were about to run out of power. Blankets, hot drinks and food were distributed. Several were evacuated by the Red Cross and the police. If you end up in a queue: Listen to the rescue team – the rescue team is there to ensure your safety, says Svendsen. They know what the conditions are like above the mountain and how many people it is safe to have in each column. The crew can reject motorists who are not well enough prepared. – Follow the column and do not drive out or try to turn around. If you have to stop or there is a stop in the column, you must not move away from the car. It can be dangerous, says Svendsen. Follow and put on your hazard lights Follow the car leading you when you drive. Keep up the pace. – Keep some distance and drive carefully. It can suddenly become slippery, says Lægreid. Feel free to use fog lights and turn on the hazard warning lights. Take care of the heat in the car Should the column become stuck in a tunnel, the electric car has the advantage that the heater can still run, without dangerous exhaust gases such as from a petrol or diesel engine. – But then of course you have to have enough power. Warming up the car costs range, says Svendsen. But at the same time, it is not a good idea to turn up the heater too much. – If it gets too hot, the windscreen freezes and then you can’t see anything. Then it’s a good idea to use cold air on the windscreen, adds Lægreid. In the end, it’s just a matter of wishing you a good trip and drive carefully. Merry Christmas!
