Andreas Steinum has been given a holiday from his job in the defense in the north to be with his extended family in the south. – Now it’s the Christmas holidays, he says, while holding his weasel sister around. – Why is it important for you to come home for Christmas? – That’s when the whole family meets. It is time to be with family and friends. Andreas Steinum surrounded by siblings Cornelius, Inger Elise and Elias Steinum. Photo: Arild Eskeland / news – I myself remember what it was like to come home for Christmas. You are a poor student and do not have much money. And then you come home to a warm and cozy and Christmas-decorated house, that’s special, says Johanne Grevstad. Now it is her daughter who is coming home for Christmas holidays. – You tend to have a busy weekday and then there is not much time for visits and the like during the year. So then it’s very nice to come home and have some quality time, says daughter Mathilde Grevstad Rønningsbakk. Mathilde Grevstad Rønningsbakk has been received at Stavanger Airport by mother Johanne Grevstad. Photo: Arild Eskeland / news A ritual to come home Now it is appropriate to play the good-natured piano notes in our head: “Da, da, da, daa, daa, daaaa..” And then the well-known voice of Chris Rea: “I’ m driving home for Christmas Oh, I can’t wait to see those faces I’m driving home for Christmas, yea Well I’m moving down that line..” Because not only by plane, but also in cars, buses and boats should people get from all corners of the world to one common goal, home. – Coming home is something that is absolutely fundamental for us, says Janne Stigen Drangsholt. She is an author and professor of literature and I can safely say that she has read more books than most. – If we look at the very first stories, they are about us all having to go out. And then I have to face the monster and find the holy grail. But then I go home again. The idea of going home is, on a spiritual level, actually something that is in our DNA, says Drangsholt. Janne Stigen Drangsholt is professor of literature. Photo: Privat And that is especially important at Christmas. – Even in pre-Christian times, Christmas was celebrated to honor the ancestors. Then you stayed at home with your family and drank into Christmas. They thought about what had been and looked forward to what was to come, together with those closest to them. So it’s up to the Christmas celebration to come home – it’s like a ritual. But it must not be about family. – No, absolutely not. And family is what you make for yourself. The most important thing is to have someone with whom you feel you belong. – I think that is also the reason why at Christmas I think that we should take extra care of those who are not doing so well and those who would rather not have a home to go to. Why are so many Christmas songs about coming home? Listen to the radio talk here. Expectations can become a pressure At Stavanger airport I hear about the expectations of Christmas dinners to be eaten, songs to be sung and time to be with the ones you love the most. – I have this idea of home as a kind of utopia. It must be so very good and I must have such a good time, says Drangsholt. – But there is quite a lot of pressure around this idea of the perfect home around Christmas. And I think that leads to things often exploding around Christmas time and. That there is a little too much pressure. So Drangsholt thinks we should perhaps realize that it doesn’t have to be so damn good. Despite everything, I celebrate Christmas in what is a very busy month, after a very busy autumn and it is very dark outside. And then it can get a bit fragile. For Mathilde Grevstad Rønningsbakk, it is in any case the opposite of stress that she highlights when she has to explain why it is important to come home. – It’s to take it easy, relax and be with the ones you love the most.

ttn-69

Are you also moved every time you see it?
