That’s according to Guro Ranes, head of the department for traffic safety in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. So far this year, 114 people have lost their lives on Norwegian roads. This is over a 40 percent increase compared to last year. – We are concerned that so many people have died in traffic this year. There are far more than last year, says Guro Ranes. Guro Ranes asks everyone to be aware and careful in traffic now into the Christmas season. Photo: National Road Administration Corona traffic reduced deaths Last year, 80 people died in traffic in Norway. It was a historically low number. It is not yet known for certain why there have been so many fatal accidents this year. But there are still two factors that are of great importance, according to Ranes. Firstly, there have been more cars on the road this year, as last year was partly characterized by coronary restrictions. – Another factor is statistical variations. Last year was low and this year it is a little more than normal, says Ranes. Number of people killed in traffic in Norway from 2011-2021 2021: 80 people 2020: 93 people 2019: 108 people 2018: 108: people 2017: 106 people 2016: 135 people 2015: 117 people 2014: 147 people 2013: 187 people 2012: 14 people 2011: 168 people (Source: Statistics Norway) The increase has occurred all over the country – It is not a typical place that stands out in particular. That’s what Christoffer Solstad Steen, press manager at Trygg Trafikk, says. – In Viken, 21 people have lost their lives in traffic, which is the most in the country, says Steen. The largest percentage increase has been in Nordland. There, 12 people have lost their lives in traffic this year. Last year there were two. According to Steen, the most common causes of fatal accidents are speed, driving under the influence of drugs and inattention. – There is much that can be done to increase traffic safety. But it is we who are in the traffic who have the main key. Drive carefully and pay attention. Our own behavior is often to blame – It’s 114 too much. We have nobody to lose, says Tom Erik Dønnestad. He is regional manager in Kristiansand for Nullvisjon Agder. They are working towards the goal that no one should die on Norwegian roads. – We know that 70 per cent of accidents are due to our own behaviour. It is important that each one of us takes responsibility, says Dønnestad. The call is clear: drive sensibly, rested, sober and wear your seat belt. – Keep your attention on what you are doing. And that is driving a car.

ttn-69

– What we see is that the number of people killed in traffic this year is roughly at the level we had before the pandemic hit us.
