Many have cried. Many of us have not seen our families for a very long time, says Dorthea Førland Solem (18). Together with around 30–40 other students from Svalbard Folkehøgskole, she was going home for Christmas break from Folkehøgskole, which is closed for Christmas. – I will get home in the end, but that means I will have a shorter Christmas holiday. I miss a lot that has been planned with family and friends, says Dorthea Førland Solem. Photo: Privat Ruined holiday plans – There are fellow students who miss family weddings. One was supposed to travel on with his family to New Zealand on Saturday, but does not get off. Another was to travel on to Switzerland, says Solem. The school has students from the USA, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland, among others. All pupils now have their Christmas holidays postponed or ruined. – We were going home for the Christmas holidays on a flight that was supposed to leave at 2.30pm on Friday. At the airport, the plane was delayed for three rounds. It wasn’t until around 20:00 in the evening that the students learned that the flight had been cancelled. Helle Andreassen is a student at Svalbard Folkehøgskole. She was one of many students who had to stay behind in Svalbard. Photo: Privat Then they received compensation with a hotel. There they learned that the journey must be delayed by up to three days. Solem says that they think they received very little information from Norwegian after the first postponement became a fact. – When we asked at the airport what happened, we were told that they did not get through to Norwegian. They didn’t know what happened. When we called Norwegian, we first had to wait an hour in the queue – then we got an answer from a person who had no further information, she says. Pupil Eirik Rødal after he learned that the flight home to Norway was cancelled. Photo: Privat Technical problems They find it very frustrating that the airline has not taken more responsibility in the situation. – It is not bad weather that has caused the flight to be canceled – it was technical problems. It is frustrating that they do not apologise, talk to us and find better solutions, says Solem. The students had hoped that Norwegian could send up a new flight on Saturday. Norwegian confirms that they had to cancel the flight from Svalbard. – Unfortunately, it was canceled due to technical reasons. It is of course very regrettable, but safety is most important, says Anna-Lena Nordling, communications advisor at Norwegian. – Cancellation is the very last resort, we want to avoid that. But there was no other option here, she adds. New flight to Tromsø The airline says they have rebooked them to the next and best alternative they could find. But that won’t happen until Sunday – with a flight to Tromsø. Some get on to Oslo the same day, others have to stay a night in Tromsø before they get on the next day. – Due to the fact that there has been so much winter weather, with major challenges and delays throughout the country on Friday, in this case we have not had the opportunity to set up an extra flight to bring back the passengers, says Nordling. Norwegian apologizes Norwegian apologizes if passengers have not received information as quickly as they had hoped for. – I just have to say that our colleagues who work to take care of passengers in such situations have had an extremely busy day. They have had a lot to deal with and there have been many delays and quite a few other cancellations too, unfortunately, she says. – It is very unfortunate, we are very sorry that they have found themselves in a very sorry situation now before Christmas. We fully understand that people are fed up, angry and frustrated. This is not a situation we wanted to put passengers in, says Nordling.

ttn-69

Now the pupils have to wait up to three days before they get home for Christmas. – It is incredibly sad.
