It will contribute to an increased risk of bullying, says city councilor for culture, sports and volunteering, Omar Samy Gamal (SV) to news. The roll-out of the cameras to stream Norwegian grassroots sports is already underway, but the proposal has also been met with opposition. So far, Oslo municipality has given a resounding, clear “no” to the introduction in municipal facilities. CRITICAL: City councilor Gamal reprimands the proposal to several special associations to stream broadside matches. Photo: Oslo municipality – The feedback from parents, the grassroots in sports in Oslo and the organizations that represent the most vulnerable is that this will contribute to exclusion, rather than inclusion, explains the city council. Skryt Recently it became known that six of the largest Norwegian special confederations, including the Norwegian Football Association (NFF) and the Norwegian Handball Association (NHF), have entered into agreements with the streaming company MyGame to show local matches from lower divisions from the age group 15 and up. “The project is to be part of the overall investment that sport has launched to increase the visibility of and interest in Norwegian sport in general and grassroots sports in particular – and to get filming in children’s and youth sports into controlled forms”, write the general secretaries of the NFF and NHF in a statement to news. MyGame MyGame is the broad platform for Norwegian team sports. With the help of a sports camera, they produce and stream broadcast matches around Norway. Source: MyGame Ice hockey and handball are two of the sports that have streamed grassroots sports matches for a few years, while the football rollout starts for real now – where over 2,000 cameras will be installed in Fotball-Norge. The first cameras were already installed in Finnmark last week. – It has been very positive to get these cameras up for us. It has gone very well. Now that cameras have been installed, it means we can show football across the county. We feel that it can help to make the distances smaller, says general manager of the Finnmark football circuit, Roger Finjord, to news. FILMING: This is what a camera that will film a broadside match looks like. Photo: MyGame/NFF Meeting opposition But the rollout has not only been met with cheers. Oslo municipality, and city councilor Gamal, already stated in May that it was out of the question to set up the cameras at facilities in the capital. He fears the measure will hit the very most vulnerable and those who are outside sports today. The city council has not changed its position. – If the pressure to perform increases in sport, if the barriers to participation increase, then it will mean that fewer people enter. – You are one of the only (municipalities) who have so far clearly said “no”. What do you think about it? – Those municipalities can make the assessments they want. My advice is not to go down that road. My feedback to the sports leaders, who are very concerned about this here, is that they must stop commercializing children’s and youth sports, and rather focus on how they can include more children, says Gamal. DISTRIBUTOR: Anders Opdahl in Amedia with Anders Opdahl and TV 2 with Olav Sandnes, will help broadcast some of the matches. Photo: Javad Parsa / NTB Reacts Ice hockey has been a mainstream sport for a number of years – also in Oslo. General secretary Ottar Eide says that they have never encountered any opposition from the municipality. – We have not received any restrictions on that. We have learned that there are challenges for several sports. Maybe we go under the radar. I am unsure why the municipality has not reacted before, he says to news. He points out that they have strict privacy and protection systems, and that matches will not be streamed if someone does not want to be filmed. This summer, NIF adopted new guidelines for the streaming of grassroots sports and a year of work and dialogue meetings with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, which will ensure that streaming takes place within a safe framework. Therefore, Eide reacts to the objections of Oslo municipality. – I think there is a bit of a lack of knowledge about systems and how they work. I can understand that they are skeptical, but I also think it is about a lack of knowledge and competence. Eide speculates that the volume and that more people are now involved is the reason why the city council is reacting. – I think it’s a shame if you can’t have that offer and that you don’t have that understanding. That one sees things more in a negative way than there is a basis for. The general secretary does not fully understand the argument of the city council, and believes that one can visit the halls in any case and that pressure is in the nature of sport. – It is quite special to see it that way there. I cannot, on that basis, see that there is a consequence. People can show up in the hall to watch anyway. I think it sounds a bit far-fetched, says Eide and adds that recruitment has increased after matches were streamed. Clearly no – Hockeyen believes, among other things, that streaming has contributed to increased recruitment for them. What do you think about it? Photo: Javad Parsa / NTB – They say membership numbers are growing, but I question whether those numbers can be explained by streaming. After, among other things, talking to the Oslo sports circle, he is ready to speak. Gamal says he is fundamentally opposed to profiting from children’s and youth sports, and concludes with a call to the leaders of the various special associations. – I am very clear that the sports top must tighten up. It’s not just about filming, but that we should rather spend time and effort on including more people. The city council will meet the NFF and NHF in January. – We probably have to admit that in sport we have not been good enough to communicate what our new guidelines actually entail. Because, like Oslo municipality, we are concerned that streaming should not contribute to performance pressure, and hopefully Oslo municipality will agree that the solution we will present will make a positive contribution in this respect, writes general secretary Karl-Petter Løken, among other things, in a statement to news. See the full response from general secretary Karl-Petter Løken in the NFF below: – The fact is that today we are in a situation where there is little or no control over the streaming of children’s and youth sports by private individuals. It is a situation that no one benefits from, and something that Save the Children has expressed concern about. We believe that everyone benefits from getting the streaming into controlled forms where it will only be allowed to film what happens on the pitch from a distance. In plain text, it means streaming the game from a bird’s eye view, not focusing on individuals. Not least, everyone has a right to object to being filmed without any kind of justification. Then the match will not actually be streamed. A security key has also been prepared which means that the camera can be used during an active match, and that the streaming must be started manually by a club representative. We therefore believe that the streaming service that sports is now in favor of will help to raise interest and create more engagement around grassroots sports, while at the same time we believe that it will help to reduce the harmful effects of private streaming without any form of control. Both normatively, but also in the form that matches will be available for those who do not have the opportunity to be present at a reasonable price. It can help reduce the need for private streaming. – We are aware that Oslo is among the municipalities that have expressed skepticism about the streaming of grassroots sports from the age of 15 and up, while cameras have already been installed in over 60 other municipalities in Norway that have streamed around 4,000 matches. This summer, the Norwegian Sports Confederation drew up new guidelines for streaming in sports precisely to take care of the considerations that have emerged in the debate in a better way. In this work, the Norwegian Data Protection Authority has also been consulted several times to ensure that privacy is safeguarded. It is gratifying that Oslo municipality has agreed to meet with me and five other general secretaries in sports in January to discuss streaming in particular. We probably have to admit that in sport we have not been good enough at communicating what our new guidelines actually entail. Because, like Oslo municipality, we are concerned that streaming should not contribute to performance pressure, and hopefully Oslo municipality will agree that the solution we are going to present will make a positive contribution in this respect. Gamal says he is always open to a meeting and will listen to the arguments. – Is it likely that you will change your attitude? – The probability of it being passed is vanishingly small. – So there is an opening for you to turn around? – They will be allowed to present their case first, but no, I don’t think that they will be successful, no, he replies.

ttn-69

– It will contribute to increased performance pressure.
