Generation after generation, the X Fold series passed us by without official distribution in Europe. Until now: Vivo has confirmed that the X Fold6 will cross borders this year, marking the brand’s first official foldable in Spain. I was fortunate enough to get an early look; I have thoroughly enjoyed the Chinese version for a couple of weeks. Spoiler alert: for me, this is the foldable to beat.

The Foldable Phones Are No Longer an Experiment

Before the Vivo X Fold6, I analyzed the Honor Magic V6. Both showcase the maturity of the foldable segment.

The Vivo X Fold6 arrives at a critical juncture. With foldable phones finally maturing and addressing most of their initial problems, it seems we are on the cusp of a format inflection point: the release of a flexible-screen iPhone by Apple. It’s no coincidence that Vivo is daring to introduce a foldable in the West, much like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8.

Samsung remains the reigning champion, especially in Spain. According to their data, Samsung Galaxy phones represent a staggering 93% of all foldables sold in the country. Following closely is Honor, the foldable manufacturer that has seen the most growth in Europe. And lurking in the horizon is the elephant in the room: the anticipated foldable iPhone, which is expected to carve out a quarter of the global foldable market in its first year.

Vivo’s Proposal: Why Now and With What Weapons?

Why is Vivo making its jump now? The timing is ideal: the segment is growing, direct competition in Europe is narrowing, and Vivo already has a strong presence with the X300 series in the market. Their value proposition is clear, and I believe it can be summarized in three key arguments:

The Largest Battery in a Foldable: 7,000 mAh that feel even larger in practice.

Cameras with ZEISS Quality: Not only do they deliver outstanding photographic performance, but Vivo has also adapted a 200mm teleconverter.

Ultra-Slim Design: Despite powerful hardware, the Vivo X Fold6 hardly resembles a regular phone when folded.

However, the challenges are substantial. Vivo is entering a territory where Samsung dominates almost entirely, and it has just completely revamped its range. Key uncertainties remain: the X Fold6 has no set launch date, configurations, or pricing for Europe. Given the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra sells for €2,200, it’s hard to imagine Vivo pricing its foldable much lower.

Technical Specifications of the Vivo X Fold6

Vivo X Fold6

Dimensions and Weight

Unfolded: 157.16 x 145.66 mm
Folded: 157.16 x 74.26 mm
Thickness: 4.8 mm (unfolded) / 9.9 mm (folded in blue); 4.4 mm (unfolded) / 9.4 mm (folded in white and black)
Weight: 235 g (blue); 228 g (white and black)

Internal Display

8.02-inch AMOLED
Resolution: 2504 x 2312 pixels
Aspect Ratio: 4:3.69
Body-to-Screen Ratio: 91.99%
Up to 120 Hz
10.7 million colors
HDR

External Display

6.51-inch AMOLED
Resolution: 2528 x 1120 pixels
Aspect Ratio: 20.31:9
Body-to-Screen Ratio: 92.65%
Up to 120 Hz
10.7 million colors
HDR

Processor

MediaTek Dimensity 9500
8-Core CPU
1 x 4.21 GHz + 3 x 3.5 GHz + 4 x 2.7 GHz
3nm Process
ARM G1-Ultra GPU

Memory

12 GB / 16 GB LPDDR5X Ultra

Storage

256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB UFS 4.1

Battery

Dual Parallel Battery
7,000 mAh
Wired Fast Charging up to 80 W
Wireless Charging up to 40 W
OTG Reverse Charging

Rear Cameras

Main: 200 MP ZEISS, f/1.68, OIS
Telephoto: 50 MP ZEISS APO, f/2.57, OIS, digital zoom up to 100x
Ultra-Wide: 50 MP ZEISS, f/2.05
Autofocus on all three rear cameras
Video up to 8K

Front Cameras

20 MP internal + 20 MP external
f/2.4
Stabilized Video

Operating System

OriginOS 6 Fold
Android 16

Connectivity

5G with Dual SIM
WiFi 7
Bluetooth 5.4
NFC
GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC
USB-C 3.2 Gen 2
DisplayPort Output

Other Features

Lateral capacitive fingerprint reader
Facial recognition
Infrared sensor
Linear motor on the X-axis
Atmospheric pressure sensor
Hall sensor
Laser focus
Stereo speakers

Price

–

These specifications are based on the Chinese model I tested. It’s likely that some details will vary for the European version.

In-Depth Review of the Vivo X Fold6: The Chinese Version Sets the Stage for What’s Coming

I’ve had the device for a couple of weeks, and it has accompanied me splendidly during leisure activities and even at a community event where I helped with photography. It performed flawlessly at all times.

Stunning Displays. Browsing the Internet, gaming, or streaming content is an absolute delight; the Vivo X Fold6 looks amazing in every scenario, whether using the external or internal display. I encountered no issues even in bright sunlight, and the crease on the foldable panel is minimal and unnoticeable unless viewed diagonally or touched directly.

I found myself more productive with the phone in tablet mode. A significant portion of my use involved split-screen functionality, allowing me to run two apps simultaneously, which streamlined tasks like writing. The Vivo X Fold6 is an excellent work tool that doesn’t shy away from demanding applications. Furthermore, it remains cool under pressure.

Unmatched Performance. The Fold6 doesn’t have a chip as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 from my Vivo X300 Ultra, but it doesn’t need to. The SoC Dimensity 9500 performs exceptionally well. It maintains high energy efficiency, rarely heats up, and can smoothly run any game thrown its way. Playing PUBG with the screen unfolded and graphics maxed out is a delight.

Battery Efficiency Like Never Before. The Vivo X Fold6 boasts the largest battery in a foldable phone—7,000 mAh split into two cells, one for each display. Not only does it shine on paper, but in practice, it is nearly indestructible: it lasted more than three days on a single charge. It took considerable effort to drain it just to capture charging graphs—it scores nearly ten for battery life.

It competes well, even against non-foldable phones. Additionally, the Chinese model comes with a 100W charger in the box, although the phone tops out at 80W charging: it can go from 0% to 100% in just over 40 minutes. While plugged in, it heats up but not excessively; wireless charging tends to generate slightly more heat.

The operating system extends the usage days, although some notification and background app cuts have been noted. OriginOS behaves like a stringent efficiency monitor, especially when background apps aren’t managed individually. Interestingly, while the European model will provide full functionality, the Chinese version allows for enabling Google Play Services from system settings, includes Spanish, and supports installing the Play Store as an APK.

Photography Excellence: A Foldable Can Excel

Foldable phones often suffer in photographic performance compared to their non-foldable counterparts due to hardware constraints. Nonetheless, the Vivo X Fold6 has proven that its cameras are of excellent quality, remarkably similar to the Vivo X300 Pro.

The triple rear camera setup delivers exceptional photos in all lighting conditions, offering solid dynamic range. Night photography, particularly with the main camera, produces sharp images, while the ultra-wide camera exceeds the performance typically expected from a supporting camera. However, the telephoto lens truly stands out.

This photo taken with the primary sensor showcases excellent detail and luminosity control, even in challenging light conditions.

Vivo has effectively paired its sensors, optical arrangements, and artificial intelligence, delivering remarkable image quality even at 10x zoom, although some detail loss occurs in medium and low light conditions. As zoom increases, the AI increasingly contributes to producing decent shots from blurred images—though with some risk of embellishing elements that may not exist.

Impressive Teleconverter Accessory

For those who find the telephoto capabilities insufficient, Vivo introduces a 200mm teleconverter that attaches to the foldable through a designated cover. While not the most convenient accessory to use, the results justify its design.

The Vivo X Fold6 with its attachment case; the 200mm teleconverter mounts securely.

Utilizing the teleconverter involves anchoring it to the foldable via its case, requiring selection from the camera settings. With the teleconverter mounted, distant shots significantly improve in quality, ideal for nature and urban landscapes while producing beautiful natural bokeh for portraits.

The Right Foldable Hits the Market at the Perfect Time

I have taken the time to deeply evaluate the Vivo X Fold6. Although I cannot provide a complete analysis of the device until further testing, the Chinese version offers a promising preview. When released in Europe, it is poised to be incredibly competitive. Vivo has managed to create a phone that truly has it all, without compromising on having a flexible display.

The multimedia experience is exceptional, the camera capabilities rival those of high-end devices, and the battery life is daunting to exhaust. It’s lightweight, the green finish is stunning, and Vivo includes a high-quality case and a powerful 100W charger. It’s tough to find many fault with this impressive offer.

Nonetheless, the crease on the inner panel is still noticeable, and the mechanical parts may slightly compromise the phone’s durability. Opening it takes a little effort, and while the device could have benefited from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the MediaTek is still formidable. Additionally, its price is likely to be high upon its Western release, especially if Vivo incorporates that highly desirable teleconverter, which amplifies the photography experience.

Vivo could not have chosen a better introduction to the Spanish market. Among all the foldables I have tried, the Vivo X Fold6 is the one that has impressed me the most as a whole. While I await more comparisons with Samsung’s offerings, Vivo has emphasized that owning a foldable does not entail major compromises—beyond the undoubtedly high price tag.

Images by Xataka.

General News – 2

Vivo has been crafting some of the best foldable phones on the market for years, but for those of us in Spain, there was a significant hurdle: we had to risk importing one.
