(REUTERS/Irina Dambrauskas)

Central Bank’s Dollar Purchases in 2026

The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) has marked a significant milestone by achieving a balance of USD 13 billion in dollar purchases for the year 2026. This achievement is highlighted by an impressive 134 consecutive days of foreign currency purchasing balance, culminating with the recent acquisition of USD 345 million on a recent Friday.

Targeted Monetary Strategy

At the onset of 2026, the BCRA commenced the fourth stage of its monetary and exchange program, establishing a target range of USD 10 billion to USD 17 billion for dollar acquisitions throughout the year. As evidenced by the data, the BCRA’s purchases have surged to USD 13.1 billion, thereby exceeding the predetermined expectations.

Growth Factors

From January to July, the influx of dollars was primarily facilitated by increased revenues from the agricultural, energy, and mining sectors, along with companies and provincial governments issuing debt in international markets. This inflow presented the BCRA with ample opportunities to bolster its foreign currency reserves.

Market Interventions

In June, the bank opted for a reduction in interventions to mitigate market pressures. Amid rising demand, the wholesale exchange rate saw a fluctuation of over 5%, surpassing inflation rates for the first time since October 2025. Official purchases in June totaled USD 1.42 billion, a stark decline from May’s USD 2.6 billion.

Recent Trends in Acquisitions

As of July, the BCRA reported a total acquisition of USD 1.94 billion, surpassing June’s figures. Just this week, direct purchases in the Multi-Asset Currency (MLC) reached USD 492 million.

Inflation and Reserve Management

The BCRA has successfully met its reserve accumulation target for the year despite challenges observed in the first quarter, related to the Ministry of Economy’s financing necessities. The strategy to maintain a stable exchange rate involved increasing the issuance of pesos while allowing the Treasury to absorb surplus through local currency debt.

Current Exchange Rate Dynamics

As of recent transactions, international reserves escalated to USD 49.18 billion, reflecting a daily increase of USD 499 million. However, the wholesale dollar has seen an increase of 42 pesos, which is 2.9% year-to-date, still significantly lower than the perceived inflation rate of nearly 18%.

Continued Market Developments

The official exchange limit has been set at $1,836.23, providing the BCRA with the capacity to continue market purchases. Meanwhile, the public dollar price has reached $1,520, reflecting an ongoing increase.

Amidst these developments, financial dollars also demonstrated an upward trend, with the “cash with settlement” nearing $1,600. The shifting dynamics in Argentine currency markets underscore the significance of these monetary policies.

News in development…

General News – 2

The BCRA had 134 consecutive days with a buying balance inside and outside the exchange market.
