That’s what Peppi Kiviniemi-Siddiq of the International Migration Organization (IOM) says to news. Many of them have an education from colleges and universities. They are gullibly lured into criminal networks through attractive advertising campaigns that promise well-paid jobs in Asia. – Falling into a trap Those who interviewed Tan for the job were from Malaysia, and he was interviewed in his home country. – I also checked with the job platform whether the company was serious. I had never heard of people from Malaysia being involved in scams in Cambodia. That was probably why I fell into their trap, Bilce Tan tells news. It was only after he was picked up at the airport in the Cambodian capital and then driven four or five hours into the mountains, that he realized how bad he was. When they were almost there, Tan experienced a terrifying sight. Along the road there were guards with weapons every 100 or 200 metres. He says they were wearing long black shirts and black trousers. – When we arrived at the main entrance, they were well armed and had dogs. I was scared, says Bilce Tan. – Unparalleled He was searched and immediately told that he was not allowed to leave the well-guarded gates. – I saw many tall buildings on the inside. It took me fifteen minutes to walk to the building where I was going to sleep, so you can imagine the area is huge, says Tam. Tan is 41 years old, but was one of the oldest. He assumes that there were around 7,000 people inside, but probably some of these were volunteers in the area. Tan believes most people who were in his situation were between twenty and twenty-five years old. – It is not always the case that these fraudsters look for young people, but those who bite are mostly young, says Jan Santiago, to news. He is deputy chairman of the organization Global Anti Scam (GASO). Jan Santiago is deputy head of the organization Global Anti Scam Photo: Private Tan had got a job as a senior customer service representative and had learned that they would also give him a position as manager in business development. Proficient in languages The customer service in reality consisted of defrauding others. The victims are forced to participate in various types of fraud, including so-called “pig butchering”. This involves manipulating people over time to gain their trust, and then delivering the shock when the manipulated person is soft enough to be duped into false investments. – What we have seen so far is that those who are recruited are people who are good at data and online platforms. In addition, they know several languages, one of which is often Chinese, says Kiviniemi-Siddiq. Peppi Kiviniemi-Siddiq works as a senior specialist in migrant protection at the International Organization of Migration (IOM) Photo: IOM She works as a senior regional migrant protection specialist at IOM’s office in Bangkok. – The amount we see now, and the diversity of the nationalities of the victims, is of an unparalleled scale, she says. Most identified victims are Asian. They come from Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Others come from distant countries such as Brazil and Kenya. Some are said to have also been brought in from Europe. – Punished A video shows people throwing themselves into the river. Security guards with clubs and whips follow close behind. This dramatic video will show 42 people fleeing captivity and forced labor at a casino in Cambodia. Many do not understand that they have ended up in the clutches of criminals until they experience being driven across a border, and then being locked inside a building. Cambodia, and increasingly Myanmar, appear to be heavily used. GASO is said to have helped 191 people to be released. – Those who experience the strictest conditions can experience everything from being denied food, to beatings with electric batons, says Santiago. He says that an example is often made of those who try to escape or contact the outside world. They may experience physical punishment and outright torture. . Computer literate young people in Vietnam have also become attractive victims of forced labour. Here, people sit in a cafe in Hanoi while the police pass by. Photo: NHAC NGUYEN / AFP Interrogation room Tan was also punished, when it was discovered that he tried to alert the outside world about what had happened to him. He says that they dragged him out of the top bunk so that he fell on the floor and then pressed his head against the floor. – They tied my ankles. Three people dragged me by the arm and neck, and dragged me to an interrogation room where I stayed overnight. They used lamplight directly in my eyes, he claims. They forced information on bank accounts and passwords out of him, and gained full control of all his savings. He says that they had information about the wife, knew who the parents were, what they looked like, and they knew which school the son went to. Nightmare Tan eventually manages to escape, with the help of an insider, but even though he’s back in Malaysia, the nightmare isn’t over. – They have people in Malaysia and I know they are after me, because I have come out with my story. I hope I can expose them, before they get on me, says Tan. The Malaysian wants a greater focus on the problem so that others do not fall into the same trap as him. He has already told his story to other media organizations, such as Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, and Kosmo. He has tried to report the case locally in five different courts, but the case has not come up. – I think there is an element of surprise, which to some extent has taken the authorities by surprise when it comes to the scope of this, says Kiviniemi-Siddiq. Risking punishment The victims of this type of human trafficking do not necessarily report when they have escaped. Not all countries’ legislation takes into account the fact that one has been forced into criminal activity, and the victims therefore also risk punishment. The authorities in several Asian countries, such as Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia, have begun to take the new reality seriously. – There is still a reluctance to treat the problem as human trafficking, because so far it is often treated as smuggling, says Kiviniemi-Siddiq. In a recent report, the UN writes that modern slavery increased by ten million between 2016 and 2029. Around fifty million people suffer either in forced labor or in forced marriage. Vietnam is shaken by stories of young people being lured into forced labor in the neighboring country. In the photo, moped drivers drive through a residential area to be demolished in Hanoi. Photo: NHAC NGUYEN / AFP Global Traditionally, human smuggling activity is formed along migration routes, but this does not apply to the new trend. It seems to be more well thought out and precise. – This is a completely independent and global setup. I have not seen that before, says Kiviniemi-Siddiq. The dramatic incident, which was caught on video in Cambodia’s Kandal Province, was published on social media in August. The victims are said to have been held captive in a casino. Most survived the escape, but a sixteen-year-old boy is said to have drowned, and another is said to have been caught by the guards.

ttn-69

– Most of the victims who are tricked into this type of fraud are computer literate young people.
