Now there is full coverage everywhere, so it is difficult, says Bjarne Rørdal after the mobile mast in the island municipality was seen operating. Nobody knows for sure how many people still lack mobile coverage, but probably somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 people. In the island municipality of Solund, people live on 13-14 islands and places without roads. The road to the neighbor can be long, and the poor mobile phone coverage has been challenging for emergency services. Therefore, the municipality has collaborated with Telenor on a total of six base stations which are now in operation, or will be in operation in the near future. – It is important to us that people should be able to live in all parts of the municipality. It has a lot to say about how the landscape and villages are taken care of, says mayor Gunn Åmdal Mongstad (Sp). Mayor Gunn Åmdal Mongstad (Sp) opens the new Klovedalsheia base station. Photo: Sander Eide Aase / news At the turn of the year, the copper network will disappear – Norway is a large country geographically, so even if 99.8 percent of the population has coverage where they live, there is still about 13 percent of the area that does not have coverage, says Bjørn Amundsen, coverage director at Telenor. Despite the fact that more and more of Norway’s public sector is being digitalised, no one is responsible for delivering mobile and internet coverage to the entire country. From the turn of the year, landlines over the old copper network will end, and over the past three years around 100 municipalities have contacted Telenor for internet and mobile projects. Bjørn Amundsen is coverage director at Telenor. Photo: Elisabeth Sandve / news – In connection with the remediation of the copper network, we have been clear that no one should lose their phone. Either we move them to fiber or mobile. For some very few people, we have been forced to find special solutions. In Botnane in Bremanger, after a long battle last year, the residents still got to keep their copper network until a better solution was in place. Expensive development In several places in the country, master plans are now being built as a joint venture between the municipality, the power company, Telenor, and with support from central governing authorities and local voluntary efforts. – If we are to cover the last bit, it must be public on the field. I would estimate that to build out the tiny bit that remains, it will cost about as much as everything we have built so far, says Amundsen. Among other things, the geography makes it very expensive to get proper mobile coverage along the vegan route. – Today I am in Alta where we are looking at Europaveg 45 between Kautokeino and Alta. Here, the power supply to the base stations alone will amount to a double-digit million amount. That says a bit about how complicated it is. Simple everyday life In Solund, Bjarne Rørdal and his wife only have three close neighbours, but especially in the summer, cabin people and others come to the island. Then the population rose from 770 to more than double. Everyone is dependent on the signal in and out of the mobile phone. – It has not been so easy when someone wants to get hold of you, but now it will be much easier to keep in touch. So this was a nice Christmas present.

ttn-69

With the opening of the new base station at Klovedalsheia in Solund in Vestland, there has been one less cleared area on the mobile coverage map in Norway. – Before, we only had one line on the mobile phone, and I had to sit on the stairs inside the house.
