As outdoor activities become increasingly difficult, even indoor ones, like train travel, are not exempt from the effects of soaring temperatures.

CCOO’s Alarm on Air Conditioning Failures

The CCOO union has raised serious concerns about the air conditioning systems in Alvia trains operating between Madrid and Extremadura. They report that these trains often travel without functional air conditioning, particularly during heat waves. According to Miguel Fuentes, Secretary of Mobility at CCOO, “this is not a one-off incident,” but a recurring issue that jeopardizes the health of both passengers and train staff.

Severe Conditions Inside the Trains

The CCOO reports that air conditioning failures occur in the Alvia S730 series trains when external temperatures exceed 35 to 36 degrees Celsius. In such cases, the air conditioning in one or more cars may cease to function, turning the trains into “ovens.”

A recent report from The Extremadura Newspaper illustrated the severity of the issue after a train trip left passengers scrambling for available seats in air-conditioned cars due to faulty cooling systems. One affected traveler recalled, “In Madrid it was very hot, in Atocha more of the same… it was the finishing touch,” highlighting the frustration of expecting relief from the heat only to find themselves in an oppressive environment.

Renfe’s Response

When contacted by Xataka, Renfe acknowledged the situation and emphasized that their trains are routinely inspected and designed to endure temperatures ranging from -10° to 40°C. However, they noted that extreme conditions, such as temperatures exceeding 40°C, trigger automatic protection mechanisms that can temporarily disable air conditioning to prevent significant breakdowns.

“In exceptional circumstances, the pressure of the refrigerant gas can spike to critical levels, causing a temporary stop that affects the internal temperature of the train.”

Proactive Measures and Safety Concerns

In light of this ongoing issue, Renfe stated that they are investigating further measures to enhance passenger comfort and safety. Existing approaches include halting ticket sales during extreme weather to allow for the relocation of passengers and providing alternatives such as fully air-conditioned trains or bus transfers when safe travel cannot be guaranteed.

Health Risks of High Temperatures

The safety implications of prolonged exposure to high temperatures cannot be overstated. Reports indicate that heat can “sequester blood,” leading to fainting spells or heat strokes, making it essential for travelers to seek air-conditioned environments, especially during scorching summer months. Alarmingly, between May and July, there have been 15 notable incidents involving the air conditioning systems on Renfe trains.

Looking Beyond Spain

The situation has caught the attention of neighboring countries, with Germany, France, and Denmark observing how Spain copes with the extreme heat. While some countries are halting services due to health safety concerns, Spain’s ongoing issues reveal that significant improvements are still needed to ensure reliable and safe travel conditions during heat waves.

As Spain continues to face increasingly severe heat waves, the battle for reliable and comfortable train travel remains an ongoing challenge, prompting urgent calls for reform and improvement in railway infrastructure.

General News – 2

Trains in Extremadura Struggle Amidst Heat Wave On July 13, Spain finds itself entrenched in a persistent heat wave, with forecasts indicating no relenting in sight.
