REUTERS/Stringer

Continuing Maritime Activity Amid Tensions

The maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz experienced a noticeable decline following a peak on Wednesday. However, by Thursday and Friday, the strait remained active. Notably, activities continued along the southern route next to Oman, which Iran has not sanctioned. This persistent activity comes despite alarming reports that a Singapore-flagged container ship was struck by a projectile during its transit.

Traffic Patterns and Ship Movements

On Thursday, data from the maritime analytics platform Kpler revealed that 42 vessels transporting raw materials passed through the strait, a slight decrease from 57 on Wednesday. Among these, vessels included oil tankers, gas tankers, and dry bulk cargo ships. Of the 42 ships, 10 entered the Gulf while 32 departed, with half utilizing the southern passage adjacent to Oman.

By Friday afternoon, another 29 raw material ships made their crossings, comprising 10 entering the Gulf and 19 leaving. Out of this group, 17 chose to navigate the Oman route, indicating that commercial interests may overshadow safety concerns.

Iran’s Response and Maritime Regulations

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard publicly admonished Oman and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for announcing a new shipping corridor without consulting Tehran. The Iranian authorities reasserted their claim over navigation rights, stating, “The only authorized transit routes through the Strait of Hormuz are those designated by the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

While maritime traffic has steadily increased since June 15, with over 70 crossings recorded on Wednesday, it’s essential to recognize that this volume falls short of the typical 125 daily transits in peacetime.

Key Geopolitical Implications

The Strait of Hormuz is critically significant, with about a fifth of global oil and gas exports concentrated in this vital passage. Current geopolitical tensions remain high, notably amidst stalled negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding a longer-term agreement.

Additional reports from Marine Traffic indicate a continuous flow of approximately 15 tankers and cargo ships navigating the strait soon after a recent attack, demonstrating that traffic remains resilient despite the risks.

Future Considerations for Shipping and Navigation

In light of the recent attack, the IMO has also halted a planned evacuation program for roughly 11,000 sailors stranded due to the strait’s closure, emphasizing ongoing safety concerns. Despite the uptick in maritime traffic, Richard Meade, editor-in-chief of Lloyd’s List, cautioned against interpreting this rise as a return to normalcy. The unresolved rules governing navigation keep uncertainty alive, suggesting that while the flow of ships may increase, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are far from resolved.

General News – 2

Boats in the Strait of Hormuz, seen from Musandam, Oman, June 26, 2026.
