(Photo: Morena)

Carlos Torres Piña’s Candidacy

The political landscape in Michoacán is heating up as the former prosecutor, Carlos Torres Piña, has entered the race for the governorship. Despite speculation about being favored by the current governor, Alfredo Bedolla, Torres Piña has clearly stated that he does not consider himself the “favorite.” His participation comes during the internal process of the Morena party, aimed at selecting candidates for the 2027 governorship elections.

Internal Process of Morena

As of June 25, 2026, Morena is actively conducting its internal selection process for state coordinators of the Defense of Transformation and National Sovereignty. This initiative is critical as it determines the candidates for 17 governorships in the upcoming elections. Torres Piña took a leave from his prosecutorial duties on June 16 to participate in this process.

Unity Among Contenders

During a media briefing, Torres Piña emphasized the importance of unity within the party. He asserted, “We believe that the floor must be even for everyone,” conveying his hope that all participants would collaborate harmoniously regardless of the election outcomes. His comments reflect a commitment to maintaining a cooperative and constructive environment amid competition.

Closeness to Governor Bedolla

Torres Piña acknowledged his good rapport with Governor Bedolla but reiterated that such relationships should not dictate favoritism in a democratic process. He commented, “We have an excellent relationship and institutional work with local and federal authorities,” indicating that his candidacy is based on merit rather than political alliances.

Competitive Landscape

On the third day of candidate registrations at the World Trade Center in Mexico City, 11 candidates were added to Morena’s ranks, including recognizable names such as:

María Fabiola Alanís Sámano

Reyna Celeste Ascencio Ortega

Gabriela Desireé Molina Aguilar

Raúl Morón Orozco

and others.

Each applicant will have 45 days to campaign across the state, hosting informational assemblies to engage with party members. Importantly, the party has issued guidelines prohibiting negative campaigning against other contenders, with noncompliance potentially leading to disqualification from the process.

Growing Number of Applicants

In total, Morena has seen 124 applicants within the first three days, a mix of former public officials, senators, and activists. This surge in interest signals a vibrant political atmosphere as parties gear up for the crucial elections. Notably, these numbers do not yet include registrations from allied parties like the Labor Party and the Green Ecologist of Mexico.

As the registration process continues, Citlalli Hernández, president of the party’s National Election Commission, assures that the proceedings are characterized by “transparency, unity, and an atmosphere of trust.” With more registration days ahead, the competitiveness of Michoacán’s political landscape will likely intensify.

General News – 2

Former prosecutor of Michoacán denies being Alfredo Bedolla’s favorite to run for governor.
