Each Grand Prix generates billions in advertising interests and investments, drawing major cities worldwide into a competitive race to secure their own circuits in the championship.

In Denmark, a group of investors, led by the Lyngbye family, intends to construct a circuit ambitious enough to attract the Formula 1 franchise. They are proposing an investment of approximately 510 million euros, building on an existing small circuit located in Padborg, a quaint town in southern Denmark with a population of just 4,393.

Meet the Investors: Two Millionaires and Their Vision

While Henrik Lyngbye Pedersen and his son Mathias Lyngbye Villadsen may not be household names globally, their lineage ties back to one of Denmark’s leading pharmaceutical firms, Novo Nordisk—the creators of the popular diabetes drug, Ozempic.

They are heirs to the wealth of Harald and Thorvald Pedersen, the founders of Novo Nordisk, and their plan involves a hefty investment of 3.8 billion Danish crowns to develop a circuit with significant potential.

The vision for the circuit encompasses a state-of-the-art 6,006-meter long track featuring 18 curves and a spectator capacity of 100,000. Beyond racing, plans include a hotel complex, a conference center, and a karting and motocross track to ensure the venue can host a variety of motorsport events throughout the year.

The Transformative Plan for Padborg

The existing Padborg Park circuit, situated on a former airfield opened in 2003, stands as the foundation for this expansion. The intent is to transform Padborg into a distinguished motorsport hub, officially rebranding it as the Denmark Circuit.

Current status of the Padborg circuit

This redevelopment aims to draw motorsport enthusiasts from Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, leveraging the circuit’s strategic location near the border and access routes to cities like Flensburg.

Rebecca Palmberg Steele, the project director, remarked, “The circuit will be located in a place that is the gateway to Europe. This project can significantly enhance the sport, local businesses, and the community itself,” according to her declaration to Børsen, a Danish media outlet.

A Bold Move Towards the Danish Grand Prix

The initial investment estimation of 3.8 billion Danish crowns is a bold step toward creating Denmark’s first-ever Grand Prix-capable circuit. Until now, Padborg has mainly served as a minor track and training facility.

The design of the circuit has been entrusted to Wurz Design Studio, established by former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz. He brings extensive experience in circuit design for both private training and competitive environments.

Spanning more than six kilometers, the proposed track would rank among Europe’s longest, and its impressive capacity of 100,000 would make it one of the largest venues in Northern Europe.

However, obtaining the necessary FIA Grade 1 license— the highest level of homologation— poses a challenge. Although the project team is optimistic about reaching this goal, they acknowledge that breaking into the Formula 1 calendar is complex. New tracks are only added when existing venues drop out, making the return on investment uncertain for the Lyngbye family.

As Denmark pursues this ambitious initiative, it is clear that the aspiration to host a Grand Prix is not merely a financial investment but a vision that could redefine motorsport in the region.

General News – 2

Formula 1 is much more than a motor sport.
