Doctors Without Borders (MSF) recently highlighted these alarming developments, stressing that over 500 health centers in South Kivu have fallen into a dire state. The loss of financial support from organizations like the World Bank has exacerbated the crisis, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and newborns.<\/p>\n
The recent suspension of financing through the Multisector Program for Nutrition and Health (PMNS) has been devastating. National health programs designed to combat malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and malnutrition, along with vaccination efforts, are faltering. MSF pointed out that these failures are largely due to security challenges and logistical obstacles, compounded by dwindling financial resources. <\/p>\n
In response to the ongoing crisis, healthcare facilities are increasingly forced to charge for services that once were free. For example, the General Reference Hospital (HGR) in Minova, a city heavily impacted by conflict with the March 23 Movement (M23), is now charging up to $100 for a cesarean section and $50 for newborn care. Tragically, many women find themselves unable to pay and may remain hospitalized for extended periods or opt for high-risk home births, where medical assistance is unavailable.<\/p>\n
As healthcare inequities heighten, many women travel long distances to access free care hospitals like Numbi. Despite receiving NGO support, these facilities are overwhelmed, with maternity occupancy rates soaring above 217%. Doctors Without Borders has been compelled to continue its support for Minova\u2019s HGR to prevent a total breakdown of care, particularly after recently revitalizing maternity and neonatology services.<\/p>\n
Issa Moussa, MSF’s general coordinator in South Kivu, warned that without urgent operational support and rapid funding, the already fragile health infrastructure will collapse completely. This collapse could lead to catastrophic increases in maternal and infant mortality across the region. The stakes are high, as vulnerable populations remain exposed not only to health service disruptions but also to outbreaks of diseases like measles and cholera.<\/p>\n
MSF is urging both donors and humanitarian organizations to reconsider their withdrawal from South Kivu. The appeal is particularly urgent given the compounded issues of conflict, including high levels of sexual violence and logistical challenges posed by ongoing epidemics.
