Certain areas exceed the World Health Organization’s recommended limits for air pollutants by up to five times. To combat this urgent problem, planting more trees might seem like a logical solution. However, the reality of limited space leads to the innovative installation of liquid trees as an alternative.

Introducing LIQUID3: A Modern Solution

Since 2021, the LIQUID3 project has been transforming urban air quality in Belgrade. Situated near the Stari Grad City Hall, these liquid trees defy traditional expectations; they are actually glass tanks containing 600 liters of water, populated by local microalgae.

The Efficiency of Liquid Trees

Though they lack the familiar shape of conventional trees, liquid trees mimic their function remarkably well. These tanks utilize photosynthesis to absorb carbon dioxide and expel oxygen efficiently. In fact, a single LIQUID3 tank is equivalent to the absorption power of two 10-year-old trees or a 200-square-meter patch of grass.

The Science Behind Liquid Trees

It may seem astonishing that a simple tank outperforms an adult tree in air purification. However, advances in biotechnology reveal that microalgae can effectively capture carbon dioxide at rates 10 to 50 times faster than terrestrial plants under controlled conditions. Studies demonstrate that these algae can fix approximately 1.8 grams of CO₂ for every gram of biomass produced, achieving CO₂ removal efficiencies nearing 50%.

Adaptation to Urban Environments

The design of these tanks takes urban challenges into account. Scientists have selected Serbian freshwater microalgae that thrive in regular tap water and can withstand extreme temperature variations. This makes them well-suited for the harsh realities of urban living.

Minimal Maintenance Requirements

Another significant advantage of liquid trees is their low maintenance needs. Maintenance entails extracting biomass every six weeks and adding water and fresh minerals. The harvested biomass can then be repurposed as a natural fertilizer, enhancing sustainability.

More Than Just Air Purifiers

LIQUID3 units serve multiple functions as urban furniture. Beyond purifying the air, they provide seating and feature solar panels to charge devices or illuminate the area at night. This multifunctional design makes the LIQUID3 a remarkable addition to urban infrastructure.

Remaining Cautious

While the initial effectiveness is promising, it is vital to approach this technology with caution. Further studies are necessary to validate the long-term impact and efficacy of these liquid trees.

Complementing Traditional Trees

It’s essential to clarify that liquid trees are not replacements for traditional trees or forests. Instead, they are designed for dense, polluted urban areas where conventional planting is impractical. In environments where soil is primarily asphalt, liquid trees offer a high-tech green oasis, helping cities breathe a little easier.

For more information, visit LIQUID3.

General News – 2

The Air Quality Crisis in Belgrade Belgrade faces a critical air quality crisis, a common issue in large cities.
