There are stories in the world of motorsport that seem straight out of a mystery novel. In 1995, when Bugatti Automobili SpA and its owner Romano Artioli declared bankruptcy, one of their last newly completed EB110 Super Sport disappeared without a trace.<\/p>\n

When the banks began to gather the company’s assets to pay off outstanding debts, that vehicle, identified as chassis number 021 painted in the iconic Blu Bugatti color, did not appear in any registry. One of the most exuberant supercars of that era had vanished\u2026 until now.<\/p>\n

A Project Broken Before Its Time<\/h2>\n

The Bugatti EB110 was born from one of the most ambitious bets in the automobile industry at the beginning of the nineties. Romano Artioli acquired the rights to the Bugatti brand and built a factory from scratch in Campogalliano, in the Italian Motor Valley, near Modena.<\/p>\n

A total of 139 units of the EB110 were manufactured, including 30 examples of its limited edition Super Sport, the most extreme version in its lineup.<\/p>\n

Among its notable owners was Michael Schumacher, who celebrated his first Formula 1 championship by purchasing a bright yellow EB110 Super Sport in 1994. Coincidentally, the Kaiser\u2019s F1 car was chassis number 020, which was produced just before the missing unit: Super Sport number 021.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, crafting one of the most desired supercars of the ’90s did not guarantee financial viability. The Bugatti brand succumbed to the economic downturn of the early ’90s, leading to bankruptcy in 1995. The ensuing administrative chaos meant that chassis 021 was omitted from official records, having been sent to a supplier for homologation but never certified, thus disappearing both from the inventory and the brand’s history.<\/p>\n

It was as if unit 021 of the EB110 Super Sport had never existed, even though it undeniably did.<\/p>\n

The Reunion with a Time Capsule<\/h2>\n

The EB110 Super Sport chassis 021 reappeared in 2019 in Munich, Germany, with just 674 kilometers on the odometer. After a thorough examination by a team of specialists in Italy, the Bugatti was displayed to the public as part of the personal collection of American collector JR Amantea.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The license plate with which it arrived in the country left no doubt about its history: “LOSTEBSS”, a direct reference to its long-lost status.<\/p>\n

Post-rediscovery, the EB110 Super Sport has not remained hidden in storage. Unlike its previous owner, Amantea showcased it at top-tier motorsport events globally, including The Quail<\/a> during the 2022 Monterey Car Week, and the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance<\/a> in 2023, where it won awards for best in its category\u2014underscoring its remarkable status in the automotive collector community.<\/p>\n

The car retains its original Blu Bugatti paint along with its Grigio Scuro interior and comes with the Bugatti Certificate of Conformity, original manuals, and tools. Additionally, it features the signature of Romano Artioli adjacent to the side air intakes. Few supercars can boast such a remarkable backstory while still being in near-factory condition after nearly three decades.<\/p>\n

Technologically, the EB110 Super Sport is revered as one of the pioneering supercars of its era. Powered by a 3.5-liter V12 engine and equipped with four turbos, all-wheel drive, and a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, it exemplified an enormous leap in automotive technology for the early ’90s.<\/p>\n

Recently, this storied Bugatti has taken another turn in its eventful journey, becoming part of a lot at a Mecum auction in Indianapolis. The auction house confirmed it would be sold without a reserve price, allowing collectors to determine its final value.<\/p>\n

Although Mecum has not provided an official estimate, recent auction sales of comparable supercars suggest its price could range between $2.5 million and $3.5 million, making it one of the most anticipated lots in the upcoming auction.<\/p>\n
