Spanning three consecutive years, this series will see solar eclipses visible across Spain. While the eclipses of 2026 and 2027 will be total, the 2028 eclipse will be annular. This rare occurrence has generated excitement among astronomy enthusiasts and the general public alike. To enhance the viewing experience, several imaginative events, including music and art festivals, are being organized around the eclipse.

The Uneven Visibility Across Spain

Not all parts of Spain will enjoy the eclipses to the same extent. For instance, totality in 2026 will only be visible in a narrow strip from northern Galicia to much of the Balearic Islands. This includes regions like Asturias, Cantabria, La Rioja, parts of Castilla y León, and the Valencian Community. Other areas will experience only partial views. Given that the captivating darkness of totality can only be witnessed in specific locations, many fortunate towns are organizing events to celebrate the eclipse.

These celebrations are tailored not just for locals but also draw in tourists. The traditionally quiet areas of Spain are expected to come alive as visitors flock to enjoy the spectacle. Many hotels have been preparing for an influx of guests eager to witness the eclipse in an outdoor setting, often without the usual fanfare. A subset of attendees, however, is looking forward to what could be the most extraordinary festival experience of their lives.

The Most Unexpected Festivals Around the Eclipse

The 2026 eclipse may not linger long; in Spain, the locations experiencing totality will barely have over a minute of darkness. Nevertheless, an array of multi-day festivals are planned, featuring music performances, scientific talks, workshops, and opportunities to view the eclipse. Here are some standout options:

Eclipse Festival in Prades: This Tarragona town will experience just 51 seconds of totality. From August 10 to 13, its Astronomical Park will host a festival with music, workshops, and shows, making it a perfect spot for viewing the Perseids.

EclipsaFest in Aldea Santillana: Situated in Manjirón, Madrid, this small village will witness 1 minute and 15 seconds of totality. On August 12, attendees can join for a streamlined viewing experience, with admission fees set at 147 euros for adults and 117 for children.

Playabout Radio Festival in Ibiza: This island destination will enjoy 1 minute and 6 seconds of eclipse duration, paired with house and techno music festivities from August 10 to 14.

Umbra Festival in Agolada: Located near the Brocos Reservoir in Pontevedra, this 3-day festival will cater to lovers of techno and minimalist music, despite only having 34 seconds of totality. Tickets are priced at 62 euros.

Iberia Eclipse Festival in Vinuesa: Nestled next to the Duero River in Soria, this 5-day festival will host various activities including workshops and a wellness area. Tickets are 240 euros, covering access to music and art exhibitions.

Astral Plane at La Pinilla Mountain Station: Attendees will enjoy a minute and a half of totality in the midst of a performance by Detroit techno artist Kevin Saunderson. Entrance costs 175 euros.

Sizigia Eclipse Meeting in Alcalá de Gurrea: This Huesca town has plans for a 5-day festival near a reservoir with underground music. A ticket will set you back 262 euros, with options for additional accommodation.

Events in Iceland

Iceland, too, is preparing for the eclipses with its own viewing festivities. Here, certain locations will offer over 2 minutes of totality. However, the weather’s unpredictability and a generally less festive atmosphere mean fewer events are lined up.

Highlights include the Hellissander Festival, which will feature live music and TED talks, and the Grindavíkurbær Blue Lagoon event, held in a luxurious spa setting. Attendees at the Blue Lagoon will pay around 750 euros, which includes a meal, drinks, robes, and eclipse viewing glasses.

In comparing costs, the Spanish festivals appear to offer more economical options for eclipse enthusiasts.
