The provincial government of Misiones has announced the dissolution of its medical cannabis company, MisioPharma, to improve the efficiency of government operations. This decision, communicated by Governor Hugo Passalacqua, aims to adapt to the changing global market that has become more mature and accessible over the past six years.<\/p>\n
In an official statement released via the Official Missions Bulletin, the governor highlighted several compelling reasons for this decision. The closure reflects a response to the ongoing “prolonged and deep recession” that Argentina is facing. Factors like the “virtual rupture of payment chains” have significantly impacted economic activity, prompting concerns regarding state-owned companies like MisioPharma potentially experiencing capital losses.<\/p>\n
A crucial premise of the decision rests on the economic landscape, with the governor citing an ongoing “critical economic and financial emergency.” This context necessitates exceptional measures that may not allow achieving MisioPharma\u2019s original objectives, making its operational existence unfeasible.<\/p>\n
As part of his commitment to maximizing public resource efficiency, Governor Passalacqua stated that the majority of MisioPharma’s employees would be relocated to Biof\u00e1brica Misiones, another state-run entity focused on agricultural biotechnology. This strategic move aims to preserve jobs while eliminating unnecessary operational costs associated with running MisioPharma.<\/p>\n
By transitioning towards private production methods, which tend to be more efficient than state-run operations, the government intends to streamline processes and redirect funds to more critical areas of need. This shift is expected to produce significant annual savings, estimated at around $1.5 billion.<\/p>\n
MisioPharma was established during Governor Passalacqua’s first term (2015-2019) and was tasked with the production, industrialization, and marketing of cannabis and its derivatives. The company held the authority to manage all relevant operations, including developing corresponding products, seeds, fertilizers, and phytosanitary materials.<\/p>\n
While the initial goal was to create a self-sustaining framework for the province’s medical cannabis needs, changing economic circumstances have prompted a reevaluation of its viability.<\/p>\n
In the legal framework provided by Decree 539, a systematic procedure has been outlined for the closure and liquidation of MisioPharma. The company will continue its operational functions until April 16, at which point the formal dissolution steps will be undertaken by State Attorney Eduardo Duarte.<\/p>\n
Since MisioPharma is a state-owned company, the government will oversee the liquidation process, handled by appointed liquidator Francisco Malica, who will take charge of realizing the firm’s assets and settling existing liabilities.<\/p>\n
