It will wear on the crew and everything. That’s what Sigbjørn Hauge, deputy mayor of Voss herad, says. His municipality was the hardest hit by the blizzard that ravaged Western Norway this weekend. – What large amounts are we talking about, both for the private and public sectors? – We think it is a question of damages for a three-digit million amount, says Hauge. During the embarrassment in 2014, the total amount was still around half a billion, but the deputy mayor does not think it will be as bad this time. Here it is easy to see how high the water has been. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news You can clearly see how high the water has been. Photo: Sjur Mikal Dolve / news Both private buildings and commercial buildings have been damaged. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news Here the drying is underway. Photo: Sjur Mikal Dolve Extensive damage Several public buildings have been damaged by the flood, which was worse than a 50-year flood. This applies to the cultural centre, which will be closed for the whole of next week. The sports hall is also damaged, as is the junior high school in the center of Voss. But the damage is probably not worse than that the building can be used. Then the situation is worse with two artificial grass pitches near the sports hall. If they have to be rebuilt, it could cost upwards of twelve million. The town hall also noticed the wet element, but the damage is probably modest here, says the deputy mayor. This is what Voss looks like after the embarrassment. Here we are the football pitch and the campsite. Photo: Kenneth Kleppe / UAS Voss On Sunday, all public buildings are emptied of water. The municipality is now waiting for assessors to assess the damage. – We see that there has been a lot of water in the building, and that may mean that some of it has to be demolished and tidied up, says the deputy mayor. A number of private houses have suffered water damage, and the largest insurance companies report that they have received over 100 damage reports on Sunday morning. And there are still more to come. Here is the floor of the Park hotel. It was so ruined that it had to be torn up. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news Hard hit Evanger Voss was also hit hard by the flume in 2014. This time the water was 30-40 cm lower than in the 2014 flume. But at Evanger, two miles further away, the weekend’s flume was the worst in modern times. The water there was 20 cm higher than in 2014. The laundromat at Evanger was badly affected by the flood, and so was the shop. Monica Bjørsvik’s shop in Evanger was heavily damaged in the embarrassment. She has tears in her eyes when she shows the injuries in the shop. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news The fridge counters no longer work. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news Many volunteers lined up to help. Goods are stacked higher than usual, in order to save as much as possible. Nevertheless, much is destroyed. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news – There is also extensive damage in many private residential buildings, says the deputy mayor. – Could they have done something different in advance of the embarrassment that happened to you now? “We haven’t come this far yet. Now we are focusing on the situation and how we are going to take care of him, but there will probably be further evaluation.” Over 100 damage reports – The total extent of damage is less than feared, but for many of those who have been injured, the damage is extensive, says Line Marcelius, communications manager at Gjensidige. She points out that there have been damage reports from large parts of Western Norway, but that the damage pressure has been greatest in Voss and Evanger. There is a lot that needs to be cleaned up after the mess. Photo: Åge Algerøy / news This is also where the most extensive damage is found. Most of the damage comes from water that has penetrated into basements in houses and commercial premises. Marcelius says it is too early to say anything certain about the total extent. – Water is still receding, roads are closed and there is a risk of landslides. Don’t wait to get in touch It is already difficult to estimate the financial costs of the damage, but at, for example, Gjensidige, the average from similar incidents is between NOK 50,000 and 100,000 per damage. At If, damage reports continue to come in. – Experience suggests that it takes quite a long time before you get a complete overview, says Sigmund Clementz, head of communications at If. Both he and Marcelius in Gjensidige ask people to contact their insurance company as soon as possible. – The earlier, the better. We have people who can move out, see the scope and make it safer for the individual, says Marcelius. So many damage reports have been reported. Tala has been collected on Sunday morning. Gjensidige reports 39 damage reports. If has received just under 30 damage reports. One of these must be a very big injury. Frende has so far received 20 damage reports for around NOK 7 million. Tryg has received around 20 damage reports from people who have had water enter their residential buildings. They have also received a damage report from a shop.

ttn-69

– This is a very big event that will affect us in the future.
