On the surface, this digital approach aims to streamline identification without compromising on security. Yet, when this technology is tested in high-pressure contexts, such as elections, doubts begin to surface. This situation recently came to a head.<\/p>\n

The friction point emerged in one of the most scrutinized environments: elections. The Central Electoral Board<\/a> decided to suspend the use of MiDNI and MiDGT in electoral processes until there are assurances regarding the security and reliability of identity verification through these systems. This suspension was prompted by a request from the Popular Party (PP), which expressed concerns over \u201cdoubts and social alarm\u201d regarding the identity verification in these applications, especially in the absence of supplementary mechanisms.<\/p>\n

A Digital Advance Faces Its First Major Trust Test<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To grasp the origin of this friction, it\u2019s essential to examine the system’s design. MiDNI displays a digital version of the ID featuring basic data such as name, photo, and ID number<\/strong>, which the Central Electoral Board had initially accepted for voter identification.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the app offers a QR code that provides access to comprehensive DNI information, with validity limited to a specific time frame. This code serves as a real-time verification tool by connecting to National Police servers. However, it may not always be employed, and there isn\u2019t a standardized protocol at polling stations to use it effectively.<\/p>\n

Previously, the Central Electoral Board had maintained a more flexible stance on using the digital ID. According to El Pa\u00eds<\/a>, a similar request from the PP was rejected before the elections in Castilla y Le\u00f3n, with authorities supporting a more lenient interpretation to facilitate voter identification, even allowing voting with an expired DNI or without documentation if known personally by the table members.
