The ongoing war conflict in Iran has prompted Qatar Airways to park a portion of its fleet<\/a> thousands of miles away from its home base, with Teruel Airport emerging as an unexpected refuge for its aircraft.<\/p>\n

The Trigger for Relocation<\/h3>\n

The situation escalated on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran. This military action led to the closure of Qatari airspace and the subsequent suspension of Qatar Airways’ commercial flights. The airline, based at Doha’s Hamad International Airport, decided not to resume operations until it had the assurance of safe travel conditions from civil aviation authorities. In response to the escalating tensions, Qatar Airways has been operating only select flights through restricted air corridors.<\/p>\n

With their fleet grounded amidst a war-torn backdrop, Qatar Airways sought a secure and cost-effective location to house its planes. Teruel Airport, which does not facilitate regular commercial passenger flights, is home to Tarmac Aerosave, a company specializing in aircraft parking, maintenance, and aeronautical recycling. The airport has proven itself as a reliable haven; during the pandemic, it successfully managed the parking of 127 aircraft, including a dozen Airbus A-380s.<\/p>\n
