With this launch, Apple inadvertently revealed that running macOS is not particularly hardware-intensive. The intriguing part? We now have a MacBook powered by an iPhone 16 Pro processor running macOS while thousand-euro iPads with M4 chips are restricted to iPadOS\u2014essentially a modified iOS.<\/p>\n

Making Sense of Apple’s Strategy<\/strong>. As my colleague Javier Lacort pointed out, Apple\u2019s pathway to creating a budget-friendly laptop seems to involve using the heart of a mobile device. Currently, there\u2019s a laptop with an A18 Pro chip running full-fledged PC programs, yet an iPad equipped with an M4 chip can only handle mobile apps. The core issue extends beyond just operating systems; it’s about the apps<\/strong>. Despite Apple\u2019s long-standing commitment to integrating M-series chips into iPads, the disparity between the capabilities of a Mac and an iPad remains glaring.<\/p>\n

This paradox is hard to ignore: a MacBook with an A18 Pro runs professional-grade software like DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, or Lightroom CC. In contrast, a much more powerful iPad is limited to mobile app versions that don’t fully harness its capabilities.<\/p>\n

My work relies heavily on a PC, but I also value mobility. The iPad and keyboard combination far surpasses any small Mac in portability and usability.<\/p>\n

However, I found myself compelled to purchase a MacBook Air M4 because the iPad simply cannot accommodate my work requirements. The existing apps do not correspond with the powerful hardware, rendering even the most advanced processors ineffective under an operating system tethered to features designed for phones.<\/p>\n

The Unyielding Reality<\/h2>\n

Will it ever change?<\/strong> The dream of an iPad that runs macOS or at least allows some access to desktop applications remains just that\u2014a dream. Apple has clearly defined its product categories, and while it markets iPad M models as productivity tools, they remain bound by the restrictions Apple imposes.<\/p>\n

The reality is that iPadOS is failing to meet the needs of users. Originally, it made sense as a tablet adaptation of iOS, but the current generation iPad is more powerful than most computers available today. This powerful hardware deserves a software experience that matches its capabilities.<\/p>\n
