This all started in September 2024, when Aston Martin made a grand announcement that Adrian Newey would be their new technical director, tasked with designing a car capable of meeting the colossal changes in the 2026 regulations.

Fueled by faith in the arrival of the aerodynamic deity, every fan who approached me repeated the same phrase: “Antonio, this is the year!” This sentiment relied on a simple and irrefutable equation: Alonso + Newey = success. Unfortunately, none of my expressions or words provided any boost to this certainty.

Instead, I took on the role of the naysayer, cautioning that the most dramatic alteration in the 2026 regulations would involve the engines. Despite Newey’s 25 world titles, he remained fundamentally an aerodynamic engineer and designer. For those who were skeptical, I added that Aston Martin would cease using Mercedes engines, becoming the only team with Honda. While this could be a wise move in the long term, it was disastrous news for the short term. Why? Because at the start of a season teeming with uncertainties, the priority should be learning.

Excessive Vibrations

During the testing phases in Barcelona and Bahrain, Mercedes powered four teams, Ferrari three, Red Bull two, while Audi and Honda only had one each. Aston Martin’s late and poorly executed arrival at Barcelona meant they barely managed to test or learn. In Bahrain, the situation escalated into chaos: they completed only 400 laps, less than half of what Audi achieved and ten times fewer than Mercedes. The slow laps, clocking over three seconds behind the fastest competitors, confirmed a more significant problem than anticipated.

They dealt with an underpowered engine plagued by excessive vibrations, prone to breakdowns and without any short- or mid-term solutions in sight. Tensions in Bahrain escalated to the point where Aston Martin and Honda spent more time in discussions than on the track during the final day. Aston forced Honda to issue a statement admitting the issue was damaging the batteries and necessitated stopping testing to ensure parts were ready for Australia.

Facing a Nightmare

The problem remains unresolved, and Aston Martin heads to Australia convinced that finishing the race might be a fantasy. Their longest run in Bahrain was a mere 26 slow laps. In Australia, they face 58 laps. If Honda can’t mitigate the vibrations, they might not even see the checkered flag. With the engine frozen until at least the seventh race, finding a solution will be challenging. Meanwhile, Honda engineers in Sakura scramble to address reliability issues, with power and performance still far down on their list of priorities.

Who would have thought that reality would be harsher than expected? Who could foresee that Fernando Alonso’s 2015 nightmare with McLaren and Honda would have an even more terrifying sequel a decade later? The stark reality is that this new challenge arrives for Alonso at the age of 45, and he surely understands that Aston Martin and Honda may compete for titles in the coming seasons, but he may not be the one driving. Perhaps this is Alonso’s fate: in the right place, but at the wrong time.

Another Disappointment for Sainz

I wish I could offset this terrible disappointment with good news about Carlos Sainz, but as the party pooper, I must once again share disappointing insights. The drama surprised me in Bahrain, even though I knew Williams had failed multiple impact tests with their nose this winter, and that they also missed the Barcelona tests, sending troubling signals.

In Bahrain, the presumed disaster became evident. At first glance, the car looked simpler and less impressive than its competitors, with a weight issue nearing 30 kg—an extra burden that could cost around a second per lap on most circuits. Furthermore, the vehicle showed various other issues, rendering it the slowest among the Mercedes-powered teams.

Striving for Improvement

Carlos’s desolation in Sakhir was palpable. After a promising 2025, where Williams finished as the fifth team with three podiums, they abandoned their car’s development to focus on 2026, banking on a reliable engine. This year was supposed to be Carlos’s moment to shine. Conversely, the disaster unfolding at Williams has been monumental, with no short-term solutions available. The budget cap forces the team to prioritize efforts, and with multiple fronts to address, they can’t win them all—hopefully, they can at least win one.

Failing that, it may be another year of struggling against the tide for Carlos, trying to stand out in the crowded midfield where being invisible is all too easy. Unlike Fernando, Carlos has time on his side, but whether Williams can navigate this storm effectively is still uncertain.

There’s only one antidote to this collection of mishaps: hard work and the hope for good fortune. For us fans, it’s about believing, dreaming, and hoping. I truly hope I’m wrong and that by mid-season, both Fernando and Carlos could battle for podiums or even victories. The silver lining of starting from such a low point is that improvement is the only direction left. As my friend Pedro de la Rosa says, I’m a pessimist. To that, I respond that a pessimist is merely an optimist with experience. In the end, I’m just a party pooper.

General News – 2

Updated Wednesday, 4 March 2026 – 18:43 For over a year now, I’ve embraced the role of the party pooper.
