At Rolls-Royce, these “whims” have become so frequent that the brand has expanded its customization workshop to accommodate them. However, some requests surpass even the highest expectations.

Recently, Rolls-Royce showcased the Phantom Arabesque, a one-of-a-kind vehicle delivered to a Middle Eastern owner after an impressive five-year development process. Notably, the lengthy timeline was not due to manufacturing delays but rather the introduction of an innovative technique specifically designed for its hood decoration. Interestingly, the design itself boasts over a thousand years of history.

An Arabic Design Transferred to Metal

The culmination of this extensive research and development effort is the first-ever laser-engraved bonnet in the history of Rolls-Royce, a groundbreaking process that the company has patented. This unique project started with a specific request from a client who sought to adorn the hood of their new Phantom with a design that has graced Arab architecture for centuries.

Inspiration for the design comes from the mashrabiya, a classic element in Middle Eastern architecture characterized by intricately carved wooden lattices. These lattices serve three essential purposes: providing privacy, allowing light to filter through, and facilitating air circulation for natural cooling. This age-old solution not only enhances aesthetics but also exemplifies functionality, now realized through laser engraving on one of the world’s most exclusive automobiles.

This unique Phantom Extended was ordered through the Dubai Private Office, one of five exclusive “private offices” that Rolls-Royce operates in luxury locations worldwide. As explained by Michelle Lusby, the chief designer of the project, the goal transcended mere visual appeal.

“Mashrabiya is one of the Middle East’s most recognized and timeless design languages. For the Phantom Arabesque, we drew inspiration not only from its beauty but also from the privacy, light, and airflow it facilitates. Our aim was to capture these qualities in a manner that felt culturally rooted yet unmistakably Rolls-Royce,” she stated.

Five Years of Precision Engineering

The design of this extraordinary unit’s hood is far from a simple painting; it involves a meticulously executed technical process reflecting the complexity of the Arab lattice designs themselves. First, a dark paint is applied to the hood, followed by several layers of clear varnish that serve as a base for the artistry. The final touch involves a lighter topcoat, upon which the laser engraves the mashrabiya pattern at a depth of 145 to 190 microns. This process ensures the underlying dark tone subtly emerges through the laser-cut design.

The resulting three-dimensional texture varies with lighting, offering a tactile experience as the design is intricately sculpted into the paint.

This technique draws inspiration from Italian sgraffito, an art form that reveals contrasting colors through precise surface removal. Adapting this intricate technique for a Rolls-Royce body required significant investment in research, materials, and processes over five years at the brand’s Exterior Surfaces Center.

Tobias Sicheneder, the general manager of that department, remarked, “Laser engraving allows us to create a surface that is both technically precise and visually dynamic. The Phantom Arabesque showcases a technique that introduces entirely new creative possibilities for future clients.”

The mashrabiya pattern extends beyond the hood, making its appearance on the illuminated door sills and embellished in black embroidery on both the front and rear headrests.

Unquestionably, the Phantom Arabesque stands as a singular masterpiece, with its price reflecting its uniqueness and craftsmanship.

General News – 2

Luxury car manufacturers are well aware that their millionaire clients often request unique customizations.
