Frode “Froddien” R\u00f8nli passed away yesterday. This has been confirmed by news from people close to the family. He was 70 years old. R\u00f8nli was best known as a vocalist in the band Stavanger Ensemble, and his distinctive way of interpreting and performing songs. – Meant a lot to many Mayor Stanley Wirak (Ap) in Sandnes grew up with R\u00f8nli. – This is primarily very sad for all of us, those closest to us and for cultural life. He meant a lot to a lot of people. He was an important part of our culture, and important in city life. Wirak awarded Sandnes municipality’s cultural award to R\u00f8nli this summer. This is just sad, says Wirak. The rationale for the municipality’s cultural award was as follows: “Frode R\u00f8nli (Froddien) has been a prominent musician and vocalist here in the district for several decades. He was a vocalist in the band Stavangerensemblet from 1976, and is particularly known for his energetic performance on stage and his special way of performing and interpreting texts, both in Stavanger dialect and in English.” The audience remembers well the energy of Froddien on stage. So does the mayor of Sandnes. – He was full of life on stage, there are not many people who do not remember Frodien when they have seen him on stage. And he stood to the last. He was clearly visible and an important part of the cityscape, says Wirak. Froddien is remembered as an energetic artist. Photo: Mathias Oppedal \/ news The flagship within Stavanger rock Mayor Kari Nessa Nordtun (Ap) in Stavanger says R\u00f8nli made a strong impression on many. – The Stavanger ensemble was the flagship of Stavanger rock from the end of the 70s. They were a rock-solid band, with some of Norway’s best musicians. And with good lyrics written by Svein Tang Wa and Gunnar Roalkvam, they quickly became known all over the country, she says. Nordtun brings out Froddien’s energy during concerts. – He was always physically expressive, no one gave the iron on stage like him. Now an important part of Stavanger’s identity is gone, says Nessa Nortun. – He conveyed the Stavanger dialect to the rest of the country in an absolutely brilliant way. This was very sad news to receive and my thoughts go first and foremost to Froddien’s family and friends. Viking football has a close relationship with the artist, and wrote the following on Twitter after the news became clear: “Our dear Frode Froddien R\u00f8nli has passed away. The voice behind a blue day, and the Stavanger Ensemble. Heavy. Rest in peace Froddi.\u201d A blue day is a supporter’s song for the club. A content-rich career Froddien and the Stavanger Ensemble were leaders in a wave of siddis bands that were very successful in the 80s. Froddi has been referred to several times as one of Norway’s best vocalists, and won the reader’s choice Best Norwegian singer in the magazine Puls in 1980 and 1981. He has also contributed as a vocalist for other artists, including with Vamp on the song “Skjed\u00e5 sjel” from the album En second sun, “Husmannpolka” in duet with Mia Gundersen on the tribute album Med blanke ark – Songs by Alf Pr\u00f8ysen, and “Sammen for lifet” with Forente Artister, where he had the lead voice on one of the choruses. More recently, R\u00f8nli has fronted the band Froddi & Compagniet.
