The discovery of a remarkable deep-sea creature, the “giant ghost jellyfish,” has captivated scientists and ocean enthusiasts alike. This extraordinary gelatinous invertebrate, formally known as Stygiomedusa gigantea<\/em>, measures nearly 11 meters in length\u2014roughly the size of a school bus\u2014and was observed 256 meters beneath the surface of the South Atlantic Ocean during an expedition off the coast of Argentina.<\/p>\n Maria Emilia Bravo, a biologist specializing in benthic community ecology at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet) of Argentina, led the expedition. She expressed her astonishment upon encountering this elusive deep-sea species, stating, \u201cThe moment we saw it we were all surprised, because it is a rare deep-sea species, observed very rarely in the world.\u201d <\/p>\n Bravo has dedicated over 12 years to studying organisms at the ocean’s floor, including mollusks, crustaceans, and microorganisms. This hands-on approach allowed the team to document not only the jellyfish but also its symbiont, a juvenile fish of the genus Centrolophus<\/em>, which cohabitates with the jellyfish for protection against predators.<\/p>\n The giant ghost jellyfish is considered rare not only because of its size but also due to its infrequent sightings in inaccessible deep-sea environments.
