This extraordinary gelatinous invertebrate, formally known as Stygiomedusa gigantea, measures nearly 11 meters in length—roughly the size of a school bus—and was observed 256 meters beneath the surface of the South Atlantic Ocean during an expedition off the coast of Argentina.

A Rare Encounter

Maria Emilia Bravo, a biologist specializing in benthic community ecology at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet) of Argentina, led the expedition. She expressed her astonishment upon encountering this elusive deep-sea species, stating, “The moment we saw it we were all surprised, because it is a rare deep-sea species, observed very rarely in the world.”

Bravo has dedicated over 12 years to studying organisms at the ocean’s floor, including mollusks, crustaceans, and microorganisms. Encountering the giant ghost jellyfish was not part of the initial research plan for her “Life in the Extremes” project, which focuses on deep-sea ecosystems.

The Expedition’s Journey

Commencing from the Port of Buenos Aires and spanning over 3,000 kilometers to Tierra del Fuego—situated near Antarctica—the expedition utilized the research vessel R/V Falkor (too). The scientific team aimed to explore the diverse deep-sea ecosystems along Argentina’s coastline.

Despite the challenges posed by the jellyfish’s immense size and the complex maneuvering needed with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), the skillful pilot Sara Sergent enabled close and meaningful observations. This hands-on approach allowed the team to document not only the jellyfish but also its symbiont, a juvenile fish of the genus Centrolophus, which cohabitates with the jellyfish for protection against predators.

Significance of the Discovery

The giant ghost jellyfish is considered rare not only because of its size but also due to its infrequent sightings in inaccessible deep-sea environments. Dr. Jyotika Virmani, executive director of the Schmidt Oceanographic Institute, emphasized the importance of deep-sea research, stating that the ocean harbors an unparalleled diversity of life, much of which remains unexplored.

Besides the jellyfish, the expedition also unveiled the largest known Bathela candida coral reef and chemically rich cold seep habitats, thus marking it as a significant success in uncovering new biodiversity.

The Future of Deep-Sea Research

With their findings, the research team aims to leverage their results to advance scientific knowledge and inspire future studies. Bravo highlighted the persistent efforts of Argentine scientists despite funding challenges, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in deep-sea exploration.

“We make enormous efforts to maximize our limited resources. Thanks to joint work between Argentine scientists and international collaborators, we can run successful research campaigns,” she noted.

As research continues, there remains much to uncover in Argentina’s deep-Sea environments, promising exciting revelations about ocean ecosystems yet to come.

General News – 2

The Enigmatic Giant Ghost Jellyfish The discovery of a remarkable deep-sea creature, the “giant ghost jellyfish,” has captivated scientists and ocean enthusiasts alike.
